JLAZ001 0022.Commentary on Chapter Six.g2.0f

English

There is no refuge other than that. Since it is established as the basis of existence, those who enter a philosophical system must have a refuge that can serve as the basis of vows. As it says before: "Taking refuge in the Three Jewels of the Sugata, that is the root of the eight vows." It means that taking refuge makes the thought of nirvana firm, and from that, vows arise. In the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, it also says: "Those who take refuge are the gateway to all who properly take vows." Furthermore, by taking refuge in the Three Jewels, the obscurations of karma and sins accumulated in the past will either be lessened or exhausted. As it says in the Essence of the Sun Sutra: "Whoever among sentient beings goes for refuge to the Buddha, countless hosts of demons cannot harm them. Even if their discipline is broken and their minds are confused, they will surely cross to the other shore of birth." Also, liberation from harm and near harm. In the Noble Sutra of the Banner, it says: "Monks, even if you dwell in hermitages, charnel grounds, empty villages, and so forth, if you go for refuge to the Three, fear, suffering, and what is called bristling of hair will disappear." And, for these meanings, there are also stories of faith among ignorant people. Once, a thief was beaten three times by a jailer with a stick, and each time the jailer said, "I go for refuge to the Buddha! I go for refuge to the Dharma! I go for refuge to the Sangha!" signaling and striking him. Then, because the pain was so overwhelming, he hid under a bridge. As he mentally cultivated the words of refuge as one with the pain, he saw many non-humans coming noisily from the other side of the bridge, saying, "Here is someone taking refuge in the Three Jewels," and then they fled. Thus, even for those who are completely caught up in afflicted thoughts, the inconceivable nature of the Three Jewels does not deceive. How much more so for those who are completely entangled by afflictions and bonds, who wander in samsara, who cling to the view of the perishable aggregate, who have strayed onto the path of the Hinayana, which is one-sidedly peaceful, and who are tormented by unfavorable factors such as samsara and the lower realms?

Who would not rely on this powerful one, who manifestly protects from all (suffering), and effortlessly accomplishes all meanings of higher realms and definite goodness? As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'The Buddha protects from, constantly, all groups of afflictions, all misdeeds, and even aging and death. In order to protect from all harm, bad destinies and non-places, and inferior assemblies and vehicles, he is the supreme refuge.' Furthermore, in the Compendium of Trainings, it is mentioned that when purifying the cause of being born in bad destinies, 'Here, the Jataka of the Pig should be taken as an example.' The meaning of what is said is that it has already been mentioned that the son of a god who was about to be born as a pig did not take birth as a pig because he took refuge. Not being separated from the Three Jewels is obtained from remembering them. In the Collection of Mindfulness, it says: 'Whoever, day and night, remembers the Buddha, whoever has gone for refuge to the Buddha, these are the gains of humans.' As it is said, applying this to the other two jewels, as stated in the Moon Lamp Sutra and the Noble Heap of Jewels Sutra, the remembrance of the three is clearly explained in words. Like this, relying on the Three Jewels, thinking that I have well obtained reliance, after cultivating joy, combining it with dedication, one can eliminate sins and increase virtues, thereby obtaining not being separated from the Three Jewels in all lifetimes. Perfect prosperity comes manifestly because in the world where the qualities of the Three Jewels have not been proclaimed, that is a great blind spot abandoned by the guide. Here, relying on the immeasurable refuge of qualities, for those who follow the supreme qualities, all the perfect prosperity of samsara and nirvana will appear in this very life. The Heap of Jewels Sutra says: 'The wise follow qualities, therefore, they also accomplish the perfect meaning.' Therefore, at the beginning of accomplishing any Dharma-related activity, one should first revere and take refuge in the Three Jewels, and pray for the wish to be accomplished as desired, so that it can be easily accomplished. Thus, with the refuge that is the temporary cause, one can perfect the accumulation of merit, and ultimately obtain

The accomplishment of the two Kayas comes from the Ratnakuta Sutra: "Whoever goes for refuge to the Three Jewels, they will also perfectly complete all accumulations, and will also accomplish perfect enlightenment, and will obtain the Dharma and the Sangha." In order to ascertain the ultimate refuge, the non-deceptive fruit refuge is: The realm of the three doors of liberation, without aspiration, the nature of the vajra, unconditioned. One obtains the two purities of the complete accumulation of wisdom. There, the Paramita Vehicle considers that the part of aspiration that focuses on the Buddha who can manifest in one's own continuum in the future is considered the fruit refuge. This is not like generating the mind of aspiration, which is focused on benefiting others, but is distinguished by being focused on benefiting oneself. Its essence is from the Intermediate Mother: "Subhuti, if one does not perceive the Buddha, nor think of the Dharma and the Sangha, this is the true refuge." Here, the nature of the Dharmakaya that has already appeared in the continuum of others is taken as the cause refuge. The non-deceptive nature of the fruit refuge is that one's own mind, the nature of the clear light Dharmakaya, obtains purity, and is free from elaboration, which is the Buddha. Unchanging and without defilement is the sacred Dharma. All aspects of qualities are spontaneously accomplished and complete, and are merely labeled as the Sangha. From the perspective of essence, in the great abiding of the three doors of liberation, the object of refuge, and the subject, oneself and sentient beings, all the terms of refuge, the agent and the object, are completely purified in the realm without aspiration, which is the fruit refuge itself. As it is said in the Accomplishment of Wisdom: "The mind free from defilement and purity is the Buddha, unchanging and stainless is the Dharma, qualities spontaneously complete are the Sangha, therefore one's own mind is supreme." Thus, all the teachings of the Buddhas, although measured by the words of conventional truth to an immeasurable extent, ultimately converge into the single ultimate truth. Therefore, the first door of the path, the ultimate key point of refuge, simultaneously mastering the qualities of knowledge and realization, is not understood by most people. So, what is the necessity of mentioning the fruit refuge in the stage of the path? The cause refuge
