This is the basis of all vows and the sacred gateway to entering the teachings. When the ocean of three fears churns, one must hold firm to the white umbrella of the fame of the Three Jewels, believing they are worthy of refuge and relying on them for life, as the very beginning of entering the teachings. There are three fears: generally, the fear of the suffering of samsara; specifically, the fear of self-interest; and very specifically, the fear of ordinary delusion. Like this, those who are certain to fall into samsara, like falling into a sea churned by waves, the abode of cruel makaras (sea monsters), will develop a mind that seeks only refuge. Dignāga, the logician, said: \"The beginningless and endless samsara exists within the ocean. The unbearable makaras, such as desire, devour the body. To whom shall I go for refuge today?\" Therefore, believing that only the Three Jewels are worthy of refuge, and not other Ishvaras or Maheshvaras, etc. Why? Because they themselves have not been liberated from the fears of samsara and the lower realms, so they cannot protect others, and they are not skilled in the methods of taming those to be tamed, nor do they possess great compassion without self-interest. Therefore, the teacher, the noble accomplished one, praised the Buddha after seeing his qualities: \"I have abandoned other teachers and take refuge in you. Why? Because you have no faults and are perfect in qualities.\" Such are the praises. Among them, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have attained a state free from fear because they have abandoned all that should be abandoned, and they have realized all that should be realized and perfected all qualities, so they possess both the ability and the skillful means to protect others from fear. Because they possess great compassion without partiality towards all, they are worthy of refuge. As it is said in the Hundred and Fifty Praises: \"In whom there is no fault at all, and in whom all qualities reside in every way, if there is a mind, one should take refuge in that one.\"" } ] ============================================================ོ་ཞིང༌། །དེ་བསྟོད་དེ་ནི་བཀུར་བ་དང༌། །དེ་ཡི་བསྟན་ལ་གནས་པའི་རིགས། །ཞེས་སོ། །དེའི་ཕྱིར་སྟོན་པ་སངས་རྒྱས་དང༌། དེའི་བསྟན་པ་དམ་པའི་ཆོས་དང༌། དེ་ཉམས་སུ་ལེན་པ་ཉན་ཐོས་དང༌། བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའི་དགེ་འདུན་རྣམས་ལ་སྐྱབས་སུ་སོང་ན་བསླུ་བ་མེད་པས་ན་སྐྱབས་འགྲོ་བདུན་ཅུ་པ་ལས་ཀྱང༌། སངས་རྒྱས་ཆོས་དང་དགེ་འདུན་ནི། །ཐར་པ་འདོད་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་སྐྱབས། །ཞེས་སོ། །འདི་ལམ་གྱི་ཐོག་མར་ངེས་པའང༌། བསྟན་པ་ལ་ཐོད་རྒལ་དུ་ཞུགས་ན་ལམ་འོག་མའི་ཡོན་ཏན་མ་སྐྱེས་བར་གོང་མ་འཐོབ་པར་མི་ནུས་པའི་ཕྱིར་མྱང་འདས་ལས། ཇི་ལྟར་སྐས་ཀྱི་རིམ་པ་བཞིན། །ང་ཡི་བསྟན་པ་ཟབ་མོ་ཡང༌། །རིམ་གྱིས་བསླབ་ཅིང་ནན་ཏན་བྱ། །ཐོད་རྒལ་མ་ཡིན་མཐར་ཆགས་སོ། །ཞེས་གསུངས་པ་ལྟར་རོ། །དེ་ཡང་བདག་ཉིད་སྐྱོབ་པ་ལ་ཕྱིའི་ཡན་ལག་གམ། རྒྱུ་ནི་མ་ཚང་བ་མེད་པ་སངས་རྒྱས་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་བསྒྲུབས་ཟིན་ཀྱང༌། ནང་གི་ཡན་ལག་དེ་ལ་བློ་རྩེ་གཅིག་ཏུ་བཀལ་ནས་སྐྱབས་སུ་འཛིན་པའི་སྟོབས་མ་ཚང་བས་བྱིས་པ་རྣམས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་བ་ཡིན་ཏེ། བསྔགས་འོས་བསྟོད་པ་ལས། ཕྱི་ཡི་ཡན་ལག་སྟོབས་ཀུན་ནི། །ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ཡང་དག་བསྒྲུབ་ལགས་ཀྱང༌། །ནང་གི་སྟོབས་དག་མ་ཚང་བས། །བྱིས་པ་རྣམས་ནི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་བསྟེན། །ཞེས་སོ། །དོན་དེ་སྟོན་ཕྱིར། ཐར་པར་འགྲོ་བའི་ལམ་དང་ཡོན་ཏན་གྱི། །རྟེན་དང་སྣོད་དུ་དམ་བཅའ་མི་བསླུ་བ། །སྐྱབས་སུ་འགྲོ་བ་ཉིད་དེ་དེའི་སྔོན་དུ། །སྟོན་དང་བསྟན་པའི་ཡོན་ཏན་ཤེས་པ་གཅེས། ། ཞེས་འདོམས་ནས། འདི་ལྟར་སྟོན་པ་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཆེན་པོ་དང་ལྡན་པས་ཐར་པར་འགྲོ་བའི་ལམ་བསླབ་པ་གསུམ་དང༌། སྤངས་རྟོགས་ཀྱི་ཡོན་ཏན་མ་ལུས་པའི་རྟེན་དང་སྣོད་ལྟ་བུ་མ་ཚང་བ་མེད་པ་སྔོན་དུ་བསྒྲུབ་པར་མཛད་ནས་སྐྱབས་ཀྱི་ཡུལ་དུ་འོས་པའི་དམ་བཅའ་བསླུ་བ་མེད་པ་ལ། རང་ཉིད་ཀྱི་ཆ་ནས་ནང་གི་ཡན་ལག་དེ་ལ་སྙིང་ཐག་པ་ནས་སྐྱབས་སུ་འཛིན་པའི་རྒྱུའི་གཙོ་བོར་སྟོན་པ་དང༌། བསྟན་པའི་ཡོན་ཏན་ཤེས་པ་ཉིད་ཐོག་མར་གལ་ཆེ་བ་ཡིན་ནོ། །དེ་ལྟར་ཤེས་པ་ལ་ཐོག་མར་དང་བའི་དད་པ་ནས་བློ་འཁྲིད་པའི་ཚུལ། ཆོས་རྣམས་ཀུན་གྱི་རྩ་བ་དད་པ་ནི། །སྐྱེས་བུའི་སེམས་ལ་ལུང་དུ་མ་བསྟན་པ། །སྟོན་པ་མཐོང་དང་སྡེ་སྣོད་བཀླགས་པ་ཡི། །མོད་ལ་བ་སྤུའི་འཁྲི་ཤིང་སློང་བཞིན་ལྡང༌། །དེ་ལ་དང་བའི་དད་པ་དང་པོ་སྟེ། །དེ་བཞིན་འདོད་དང་ཡིད་ཆེས་ཕྱིར་མི་ལྡོག །རྣམ་པ་བཞི་ལས་སྐྱབས་འགྲོའི་གནས་སྐབས་འདིར། །སྲོག་ལ་བབ་ཀྱང་ཕྱིར་མི་ལྡོག་པ

Oh, field. Praising it is honoring it. The lineage that abides in its teachings. Thus it is said. Therefore, taking refuge in the teacher Buddha, and his teachings, the sacred Dharma, and the Shravakas who practice it, and the Sangha of Bodhisattvas, is not deceptive, therefore in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge" it is also said: The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, are the refuge of those who desire liberation. Thus it is said. This is also determined to be the beginning of the path. If one enters the teachings in a transgressive manner, without the qualities of the lower path having arisen, one cannot attain the higher, therefore in the Nirvana Sutra it is said: Just as the steps of a ladder, my profound teachings should also be learned and diligently practiced in stages, not transgressively, but ultimately firmly. Thus it is said. Furthermore, for self-protection, the external limbs or causes, the Buddha himself has already accomplished completely, without any deficiency, but the internal limbs, without placing the mind wholeheartedly on it, and holding the power of refuge, therefore children suffer. In the "Praise of the Praiseworthy" it is said: All the powers of the external limbs, you have truly accomplished, but the internal powers are incomplete, therefore children rely on suffering. Thus it is said. To illustrate that meaning, the path to liberation and the qualities of, as a basis and vessel, the promise is not deceptive, refuge itself, before that, it is essential to know the qualities of the teacher and the teachings. After instructing thus, the teacher is endowed with great compassion, for the path to liberation, the three trainings, and the qualities of abandonment and realization without exception, as a basis and vessel, without any deficiency, having accomplished it beforehand, for the promise of the one worthy of refuge is not deceptive, from one's own perspective, the internal limb, from the depths of one's heart, holding the main cause of refuge, the qualities of the teacher and the teachings, it is essential to understand first. Having understood in this way, first, from the pleasing faith, the way of guiding the mind. The root of all dharmas is faith, not indicated in the mind of a person, seeing the teacher and reading the scriptures, in many places it arises like the raising of hairs. Among them, pleasing faith is the first, likewise desire and conviction do not turn back, among the four aspects, in the state of refuge, even if life is at stake, one does not turn back.
