is necessary. Therefore, the root of all happiness and well-being is faith. As stated in the *Tathāgatotpattisambhavanirdeśa Sūtra*: Faith is generated like a preceding mother, it protects and increases all qualities. It eliminates doubts and liberates from all rivers. Faith is the city of happiness and well-being, faith is without turbidity, it purifies the mind. Abandoning arrogance, it is the root of respect. Faith is the best of wealth, treasures, and feet, like a hand, it is the root of accumulating virtue. As it is said, all qualities must be generated based on faith. With the arising of faith, all white dharmas gather in advance, therefore it is also the first of the seven noble riches. As much as faith increases, so much does the accumulation of goodness and qualities increase. When it diminishes, all aspects of purity also diminish like the moon encountering Rāhu. In general, noble families and those with good fortune tend to have innate faith. As stated in the *Ratnāvalī*: Because they have faith, they rely on the Dharma; because they have wisdom, they truly understand. Of these two, wisdom is the main one, and faith is its precursor. So it is said. However, as stated in the *Sāgaramatiparipṛcchā Sūtra*: A person with faith is rarer because they are far superior to others. As it is said, for those families who have not yet awakened from the causes and conditions, and especially for ordinary individuals, like losing light in a state of sleep, the proximity of faith is mostly in an unpredicted state, therefore, the causes and methods for awakening it are crucial. For example, seeing our teacher, who is no different from the Buddha, or his representatives, and likewise seeing the images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, hearing about their qualities, and reading the scriptures, etc., are all ways to nourish faith. Like Ajātaśatru's elephant, whose mind of anger and violence was pacified the moment the treasurer saw the Bhagavan. And like the merchants of the land of Gandhara, when the city was destroyed, the Brahmins laughed, thinking, "These are Buddhist lay practitioners." They refuted them, saying, "You who do not understand the qualities of the Great God are foolish and deluded." When they praised the tenets that speak of harm as dharma, those

Saying: Whatever deeds are done are sacred, and for that which is amazing, the non-sacred become arrogant. Alas, the world is truly amazing! Having said this, look at this great Brahmin, if those who have the power to harm others, if they become worthy of offerings, then bears, leopards, and tigers, beings will always offer to them. Having refuted the Brahmin's tenets with these and other statements, and having proclaimed the virtues of the Thus-Gone One, they first developed respect for the Buddha, and the Brahmin Thubka Nagpo, upon seeing the volumes of the Sutra Pitaka, awakened from his karma and regretted his lack of merit, recognizing that his own views and tenets were wrong, and thus entered the Buddhist path, becoming like the crown jewel of all rationalists—the teacher Hero. Therefore, in this present age, there is no greater nourishment for faith than reading the Sutras. Even just the Jataka tales of the Teacher, and the heavily ornamented Avatamsaka Sutra of the Great Vehicle, will undoubtedly generate hair-raising faith. Among these, the initial faith is: seeing that the characteristics of the Dharma, and the discipline, wisdom, and roots of virtue of the holy beings are not wasted, and thus having respect for it, rejoicing in it, and being accompanied by joyful desire. The faith of desire is: knowing the characteristics of the truth of suffering, being afraid of the cycle of birth and death, and knowing that deliverance from it depends on the holy Dharma—the truth of cessation and the path, and the Lama who shows it, like a bee longing for a flower. The faith of conviction is: from the depths of one's heart, having certainty about the qualities of the Three Jewels, and believing that they do not deceive, whether one is an ordinary being or a noble one, even the happiness of feeling tranquility is understood as the grace of the Three Jewels, and even the subtle feeling of suffering that arises in the continuum of an Arhat is understood as one's own karma, and there is no doubt whatsoever. The irreversible faith is: in general, the activities of hearing, thinking, and meditating, and especially in the situation of taking refuge, no matter what unfavorable circumstances arise, such as illness, harm, suffering, or the oppression of enemies and evil spirits, or whatever great changes occur, it does not turn back, like salt dissolving in water.
