are the characteristics of the vehicle. The object of the cause is the Three Jewels. In mantra, its essence is gathered in the lama. For this, with the Paramita Vehicle, aiming to attain Buddhahood at the end of countless eons, etc., in other times, taking refuge in the Three Jewels that have already appeared in the continuum of others, because it becomes the cause of attaining Buddhahood, it is called the refuge of the cause. As it is said in the "Ratnakuta Sutra": "Monks, whether for your own sake or for the sake of others, take refuge in order to be liberated from fear and terror, and the hopes you desire will be fulfilled." So it is said. The wisdom of abandonment and realization of these objects of refuge, hoping to arise in one's own continuum in the future, is the refuge of the result. As it is said in the "Vigorous Householder's Questions Sutra": "Taking refuge in the Buddha is wishing to attain Buddhahood." Similarly, it is also said for the Dharma and the Sangha. In particular, in the tradition of the Vajrayana, wishing to directly see the thusness of the mind that one possesses, which is naturally present, therefore, without seeking the Three Jewels from elsewhere, but taking refuge in the manner of clarifying that awareness is the nature of the three bodies. Without relying on a long period of time, but abiding in the state of realizing the self-born wisdom, which is unborn from the beginning, this is the ultimate refuge of the result. From the point of view of the object, in the stage of the cause, the Buddha is the main one in the Paramita Vehicle, while in the Highest Yoga Tantra, the lama himself becomes the main one. Although it is also considered that the Three Jewels of the common teachings and the Three Jewels of each mandala are the support, from the ultimate point of view, those are also form bodies, which are false and changing, and the Dharma is also the path truth, and when going from higher to higher, it will abandon the nature of the lower one, which is the false truth with defilements, and the two cessations in the continuum of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers are fears with habitual obscurations, and the Bodhisattva Sangha also has their own obscurations, and the abandonment and realization have not reached the ultimate, therefore they still need to rely on the path of the Buddha and take refuge, so it is the refuge of the cause.

Those are also regarded as refuges like escorts on the path to attaining the fruit, but they cannot serve as ultimate refuges. The Sutra of Repaying Kindness states: Question: To whom should one turn for refuge to be considered to have taken refuge in the Buddha? Answer: Taking refuge refers to the wheel of speech, which is taking refuge in the qualities of the all-knowing, the unlearned. Question: Should one take refuge in the Rupakaya (form body) or the Dharmakaya (dharma body)? Answer: One should take refuge in the Dharmakaya, not the Rupakaya, because the Rupakaya is not the Buddha. Question: If the Rupakaya is not the Buddha, why would causing blood to flow from the Buddha's body be considered an action of uninterrupted karma? Answer: The Rupakaya is the vessel of the Dharmakaya, the abode of the Dharmakaya. Therefore, harming the Rupakaya results in uninterrupted karma, but it is not the Rupakaya being the Buddha that causes uninterrupted karma. Similarly, it is explained regarding the Dharma and the Sangha, and finally, to dispel doubts: Question: If one takes refuge in the ultimate Sangha, then when the Buddhas Viri and Sari previously took refuge in the Three Jewels, it would be unreasonable to say, 'Later there will be a Sangha, go take refuge in them,' because the ultimate Sangha always exists in the world. Answer: The conventional Sangha is the dependent basis of the ultimate Sangha. Therefore, it is said, 'Later there will be a Sangha, go take refuge in them.' In general, each of the three vehicles has its own refuge of fruition. The Mahayana school considers the three Kayas to be of the same essence as the nature of the Three Jewels, while the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas consider their own cessation to be their own enlightenment, and thus do not accept the Dharma and Sangha as separate entities. Here, it is said in the Hinayana Pitaka that one should understand the conventional Three Jewels and the ultimate Two Jewels as being mutually dependent, and then take refuge, which is the antidote to viewing good and bad with discrimination and then accepting or rejecting.
