Now, regarding the refuge itself. That is to say, the ultimate nature that liberates from suffering and protects from the suffering of samsara is only the Dharma Jewel, and this is to repay kindness. The teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, because the Buddha is born from the Dharma, so the Dharma is the mother of the Buddha, and the Buddha abides in the Dharma. As it is said in the Collection of Righteous Dharmas: The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have immeasurable and limitless qualities. They are born from the Dharma, enjoy the share of the Dharma, are transformed by the Dharma, become the masters of the Dharma, arise from the Dharma, have the Dharma as their field of activity, rely on the Dharma, and are accomplished by the Dharma. Therefore, the truth of cessation and the path, which has the nature of abandoning faults and accomplishing qualities, is manifested in the cause of the refuge-taker, and all the qualities of the Buddha arise from it. Moreover, the Dharma itself does not arise solely from the cause of the teacher Buddha, therefore the two are like interdependent relationships. In the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, it is asked: The teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, why is the Dharma not mentioned first among the Three Jewels? The answer is: Although the teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, the Dharma is not taught by others who are not Buddhas, just as the road also needs to be built by people, therefore the Buddha is mentioned first. Therefore, in order to establish the relationship of "this arises from that," if one knowingly reverses the order of the names, there is fault, but those who do not know are not included. The Sangha is the one who follows the qualities of both, and although it is called a companion on the path, in reality it should be known as the basis of the three trainings, therefore it is necessary to take refuge. As it is said in the Seventy Verses on Refuge: The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha are the refuge of those who desire liberation. Here, although the treatises of the Great and Small Vehicles are not repeated, and there is no deviation from the undifferentiated path, people are accustomed to the nature of the five obscurations, such as wrong views and doubts, so in order not to be confused about the definition of refuge, the object, the difference in intention, and its cause and effect, the method of correcting the mind with meaningful associations.

Even if not explained in detail, the way to understand through scriptural authority should be explained like the Hinayana. In the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, it says: Taking refuge means protection or guardianship. For example, if someone commits a serious crime and flees to another country, seeking refuge with the king of that country, the king of that country says to him: If you want to be unafraid, do not leave my country, and if you listen to my teachings, I will protect you. Ordinary people are also like that, controlled by demons and having the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, so they should take refuge in the Three Jewels. If one single-mindedly takes refuge in the Three Jewels and does not violate the Buddha's teachings, then the evil king of demons can do nothing. Previously, a pigeon was chased by a hawk and fled to the shadow of Shariputra, but still felt fear and dread. Later, when it fled to the shadow of the Buddha, there was no fear and no trembling. Therefore, the Buddha possesses great love and great compassion. Shariputra does not have this great love and compassion. This, in relation to the Buddha, means that Shariputra's love and compassion are only slightly inferior, and a negative tone is used here, but it should also be understood that Shariputra is not without love and compassion. The reason is that the Buddha has no habitual tendencies, while Shariputra's habitual tendencies have not yet been exhausted. The Buddha practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva for countless three great kalpas, while Shariputra only practiced asceticism for sixty small kalpas. Therefore, when the pigeon fled to the shadow of Shariputra, it still felt fear and dread, but when it fled to the shadow of the Buddha, it became fearless. Question: If taking refuge in the Three Jewels can eliminate sins and non-virtue and one will not feel fear, then why did someone like Devadatta, who took refuge in the Three Jewels, ordained with faith, and whose discipline was also complete, commit the three unpardonable sins and ultimately fall into the Avici hell? Answer: Protection is to protect those who are worthy of protection.
