JLAZ001 0020.Commentary on Chapter Four..g2.0f

English

Attaining accomplishment is not necessarily limited to householders. As stated earlier: "Therefore, to attain the noble four truths, one should always strive diligently. Even householders who dwell in mansions and possess wealth can, through wisdom, cross the river of afflictions." Thus, householders who reside in royal power, such as Gzugs can snying po (Embodied Essence), can also cross the river of afflictions by understanding the four noble truths. Therefore, the noble path is accomplished through individual effort. It is not as if complete knowledge descends from the sky from the beginning, nor does it emerge from the earth like crops. Therefore, even ordinary individuals should rely on virtuous friends, strive to cross the river of afflictions, and not be afraid. This is what the noble Nagarjuna taught. As it is said: "Those who have realized the Dharma did not descend from the sky like crops, nor did they emerge from the earth. Previously, they were ordinary individuals afflicted by defilements." Thus it is said. However, those who do not maintain mindfulness cling to suffering as happiness, to impermanence as permanence, to selflessness as self, and to impurity as purity. With these four inverted views, they create the causes for falling into the lower realms and samsara. As stated earlier: "Those who do not maintain mindfulness hold four inverted views, which are the root of destruction." Since there is no "self" that views in this way, then who experiences the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions? If it is said that its nature is "self," the essence of form and so on, this should be refuted. The Letter to a Friend (Bshe sprin) states: "Form is not self. Self is not associated with form, self does not reside in form, form does not reside in self. Likewise, realize the remaining four aggregates as emptiness." Therefore, "self" is not the essence of form and so on, because it will become impermanent, just like form and so on. If it is said that "self" is something other than form and so on, then there are three ways to examine this: Is it like a herdsman with a buffalo, existing in association with form and so on? Or is it like a mongoose dwelling in the grass, existing on top of form and so on?

Furthermore, just as one relies on vines and parasitic plants, if it is said that form and so on rely on it, then let us refute that with reason: What dominion do I have over form and so on? Just as one has dominion over employing herds of buffalo and milking, it is not the case that it can abandon or take up form and so on according to its own desire. Even unwillingly, because of seeing the fearfulness of form and so on, I am not one who possesses form. The meaning of the second aspect: How can it be said that this abides in form and so on? For a non-material dharma, it is not possible to abide above and below, like a caretaker sitting on a mat. Because, the one who abides, who is manifest as abiding in them, does not benefit form and so on in the slightest, and form and so on are the same for it. Furthermore, this rides on it and enters into them, for example, like riding on an elephant and being like an elephant, that is also not possible, because even unwillingly, entering and leaving are seen. It is not the case that I enter or leave form and so on according to my own desire. The reason for the third aspect is: Vines and so on rely on the earth, and relying on that, the arising, abiding, and increasing of form and so on are seen. The non-arising and so on of form and so on do not depend on me in that way, because even when I do not exist, external form and so on exist in their own place. According to some, just like grass and other living things, it is uncertain for salt and so on. Thus, destroying the twenty views of the aggregates, this is the essence of the oral instructions, therefore here it is established according to the Indian treatises. Therefore, form is not self, I am not one who possesses form, I do not abide in form, form does not abide in me, similarly, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, these four are also known to be emptiness, and by destroying the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, it is called obtaining the fruit of stream-entry. Why are they called the noble truths? Because the noble ones, such as stream-enterers, see them as truth.
