Commentary on Chapter Four. Commentary on Chapter Four. The fourth general topic is the establishment of the nature of suffering in cyclic existence. In order to show the connection with the first turning of the wheel of Dharma, it says: Those who rely on the supreme boat of higher realms, for a while, are licked by the tongue of the cruel crocodile of the lower realms, but since they have not reached the dry land of liberation, they should rely on the guide of the four noble truths. In our realms of cyclic existence, even those who rely on the particularly superior basis of gods and humans, which is as vast as a great boat, and who experience only the feeling of happiness, are very close to being licked by the tongue of the cruel crocodile of the lower realms. Since they have not attained a state like reaching the dry land of ultimate security, liberation, and the state of omniscience, they should rely solely on the guide of the four noble truths. Thus, it is adorned with imagery. Therein, our teacher, in Varanasi, said to the five excellent monks and others: Monks, this is suffering. This is the origin. This is the cessation. This is the path. Monks, suffering should be known. The origin should be abandoned. Cessation should be realized. The path should be cultivated. Monks, suffering should be known, knowing the unborn that cannot be known; the origin should be abandoned, knowing the unborn that cannot be abandoned; cessation should be realized, knowing the unborn that cannot be realized; the path should be cultivated, knowing the unborn that cannot be cultivated. Thus, the four truths were taught in three cycles. Therein, knowing suffering means that whether the six realms of beings are low or high, suffering, change, and pervasive conditioning, if not well controlled, cyclic existence will not exist. Thus, there are three types of great fundamental suffering: the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of pervasive conditioning. The first is when one suffering has not subsided, another suffering is added, like applying mustard on top of leprosy. The second is when, in the midst of happiness, one suddenly encounters the cause of suffering, for example, when going to relax in the forest, being harmed by a poisonous snake, or
