Just as one indulges in tasting honey from a cracked honeycomb, treating oneself in this way places oneself in a position of harm. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: Although one has the desire to abandon suffering, one manifestly runs towards suffering itself. Although one desires happiness, due to delusion, one destroys one's own happiness as if it were an enemy. How does one destroy it? Moths die because they are attached to the form or the light of a flame. As the teacher Vasubandhu said: Even having seen the great assembly of blazing fires, and having seen the great flames, due to great attachment to form, moths will enter the fire. Similarly, those who are deceived by sound are deer. They eat pure sprouts of grass, and although they are able to travel very far, deer, by the songs of hunters, will surely seek to be killed. Those who are deceived by smell are bees. Always moving in the sky, bees, whose forms are very pleasing, will surely die due to the fault of smell. Similarly, fish are deceived by the taste that is on the tip of a hook. Walking on unobstructed paths, and always moving freely, fish are destroyed by hooks because of their attachment to tasting. The way in which elephants lose their lives by mating with female elephants is as follows: Competing greatly with the guardians of the earth, one should know the habits of the king of mountains; due to the close contact with a female elephant, an elephant will surely be killed. Thus, if those sentient beings can lose their lives even through a single quality of desire, how can individuals, who are constantly connected with all five sense objects, not be harmed? As it was said earlier: Individuals who are always attached to even one of these five, these five constantly destroy them day and night; how can they attain a state of happiness? Therefore, from the mixing of the five objects of grasping and the mind that grasps, afflictions arise, and thus it leads us into endless samsara. Therefore, the noble Avalokiteshvara, in a letter sent to the young bhikshu Rabga Salzhonnu, said: Friend, what have you forgotten, or have you forgotten your vows? Why are you so attached to this desire that is like a pit of embers? If you do not strive with an extremely weary mind, how is it possible to ever be satisfied with the desire for existence? And, to the lama...

Admonition: Destroyed by evil enjoyment, not seeking the other shore, those whose minds are confused and crave desire, destroy themselves and also cause others to perish. The result of desire is suffering, sweet at first but bitter in the end. If a torch is not released from the hand, it will eventually burn the child. Thus it is taught. Showing the power of the suffering of samsara: In the realm of existence, there is the fierce and violent fire, the cruel manifestation of anger, and the swiftness of the punishment of wild beasts and kings. Suffering, both past and future, torments this being in succession. Thus, samsara is the nature of suffering, the cause and effect of suffering, and the way of relying solely on the great aggregate of suffering. In the world, that which destroys whatever it encounters is the fierce fire. Even more so, in the eyes of the noble ones, everything below the peak of existence is always seen as full of suffering, like a burning fire. Similarly, in the great wilderness monastery, the desolate plain, the friendless place, harassed by tigers, lions, bears, grizzlies, wild men, etc., with no way to escape, or imprisoned in a deep dungeon by the king's punishment, bound by iron chains, wooden yokes, and ropes, lying in impurity, with no place to stretch out comfortably, and the pain of the razor's edge approaching to harm the eyes, heart, and skin—what is that feeling of suffering like? Even more than that, sentient beings, without any time to be liberated, sink into the deep abyss of samsara like the drawing of a water bucket. Bound tightly by the chains of birth, old age, sickness, death, and the three great and eight sufferings. Each time they take rebirth in existence, they wander in the unbearable great wilderness of the bardo. The impurity of bad karma covers the body, and in a place of comfort, one cannot breathe freely. The sharp arrows of downward currents and evil thoughts pierce the eye of wisdom, the heart of patience, and the skin of the accumulation of virtue. Therefore, one must wander in the ocean of samsaric suffering without end, which is the balance of those temporary terrors. As the Extensive Play Sutra says: Children are attached to and delighted in this samsara, just as a pig is attached to impure things. Here:
