Tsalwa. Just as it is said, "Suffering itself is suffering; which wise person would, like a blacksmith, burn again on the burning flames?" This indicates that one should not add suffering to those who are already tormented by suffering. Next, to show the suffering of illness, (the scripture says:) "The pool of the aggregates, which is naturally balanced, is made turbid by the feeling of illness; the five aggregates of clinging are exhausted, and one is afraid of losing the stability of life." Like this, for sentient beings composed of the four elements, the diseases that arise from the imbalance, aggregation, interdependence, or mixture of wind, bile, and phlegm make the pool of the body, which is balanced in its aggregates, turbid. What is called illness is the suffering of disease in the body, the feeling of recognizing it as suffering, the interruption of the connection of consciousness, the action of curing one disease and causing another, the experience of the essence of pain by consciousness, which causes the suffering of the five aggregates of clinging. This disturbs the mind, and all pleasurable things are turned upside down. Illness is a great fear, thinking that it is definitely a precursor to death. As it is said in the upper commentary of the Hundred Deeds of Karma, "A body tormented by illness is like the feeling of hell." The suffering of death is: In this world, the value of life is immeasurable, therefore the suffering of death separates those clinging beings from relatives, friends, and pleasures, and they depart without any foothold. Even if all the wealth of the world is piled up, it cannot measure the value of life. Because one can never be liberated from the suffering of death. One can only lie at the end of the bed, facing the moment of lifting the huge corpse. No matter how much one has of territories, pleasures, dwellings, relatives, friends, children, retinues, food, clothing, and so on, one cannot take even a small part. It does not follow, it is not given up, one cannot control the next life. Even surrounded by a gathering of relatives, one can only endure that intense suffering alone. In an unwilling state, memory fades, consciousness is confused, and breath stops. Not belonging to any of the six realms of existence, one is in the bardo, without protection or refuge, abandoned by the aggregate of form, leaving only the name.
