of jealousy. The enemy cuts his own heart with a knife, and then on the fierce battlefield cuts off his own head and limbs, causing suffering to the Asuras. Like this, the Asuras naturally have arrogance, which arises from pride, therefore they suffer from the suffering of being afflicted by defilements. In particular, they are distressed by jealousy of the glory of the gods, and they have the suffering of fighting with the gods. What is the cause? Because the people of Jambudvipa accumulate great non-meritorious karma from mindfulness, and because the gods are jealous of the daughters of the Asuras, and the Asuras are attached to the nectar of the gods. Other sutras say that seeing the wish-fulfilling tree of the gods adorned with flowers and fruits, they become angry and say: The glory and perfection of this tree is in the power of the gods, it is meaningless in our place. Therefore, they cut the tree with knives, thus causing disputes. First, they divide the political groups to fight. For example, the eight Nagas of the white side, such as Joy and Near Joy, and the eight of the black side, such as Hūlu and Great Hūluka, fight and argue with each other. Whichever side loses, they invite the sky-dwelling gods who are on their side. When they fight after being invited, if the Nagas of the black side lose, they also invite Rāhu of the water realm to fight. If Rāhu wins, the Nagas of the white side and the sky-dwelling gods invite the armies of the Four Great Kings. All their armies put on strong armor and fight. When the armies of the Asuras are defeated, the one with the necklace from the place of the white lotus also fights on the side of the Asura's army, but is still defeated, so they seek help from the one who weaves beautifully. At that time, the one who weaves beautifully angrily stomps his feet on the golden ground, causing the earth to shake, Mount Sumeru to shake, and the throne of the Lord of the Gods to shake. At that time, Indra thought: What is the reason for the earth to shake like this? Is it that a Bodhisattva has ascended from ground to ground? Is it that an emanation of the Thus-Gone One is performing miracles in the world? Is it that a great non-meritorious karma is in accordance? Or is it that the leader of the Asuras is engaged in battle?

Having observed with divine clairvoyance and knowing that war was imminent, they gathered in the Dharma Hall of Goodness and gave the order: "Those gods who are nearing the end of their lives and are about to face death should remain in their abodes. The rest of you gods should be joyful about the matter of war." After saying this, they went to the Joyful Grove in the north and, gazing at the sleeping couch in the trees, comprehended the omens of victory. Then, those assemblies of gods went to the Grove of Harsh Transformation, and merely entering its pool, they immediately generated intense hatred and became joyful about the matter of war. From the Armor Grove in the east, they distributed the various precious and extremely strong armors that had emerged from the trees. They mounted the war elephant named 'Extremely Stable,' which was seven cubits in height. Upon the thirty-three heads were the lord of the gods of the present age, named 'Beautiful Eyes.' Eight wealth gods, such as Bodhi and Great Power. Twelve friends, such as the Lord of Hosts and Bhringiriti. Twelve sons of the sun, such as Joy and Near Joy, these thirty-two attendants resided there, and each head manifested into seven, upon which were so many celestial armies. Those heads also manifested seven tusks each, and each tusk had seven gardens and pools. In them were seven extremely beautiful celestial maidens singing and dancing. Each maiden had seven servants. Each servant had seven cymbals, manifesting these, they met at the western side of Mount Meru, where it meets the water's edge, and engaged in battle. The Asuras, those powerful and lustful beings, were merely intoxicated by the illusions of the dancing girls before the lord, and in an instant, they would be destroyed by the gods' vajras and chakras. At that time, the gods, by the power of their merit, in groups of seven, surpassed the Asuras. From the faces of the sun and moon, they hurled vajras, chakras, arrows, clubs, Mount Meru, and so on, thereby destroying the Asuras. The Asuras also came with elephants, horses, chariots, and the four divisions of the army, wielding vajras, great arrows, shakti, Mount Meru, and wheels.
