Entering, there are the hells of cold oppression, the dark hells, the extremely hot hells, the hells where sharp blades touch, the hells of the wheel of swords, the hells with chariots of fire (Sanskrit: agniratha, अग्नि रथ, agni ratha, fire chariot), the swamp of excrement, boiling water, the river of burning embers, the forest with leaves of swords, the iron wheel, the iron Shalmali tree, the iron bed, the iron wheel, the iron cave, the iron mortar, the sequential crushing, the copper cauldron, and so on, all as described in the scriptures. Thus, those hells and sinners, with only the interval of breathing in and out, have nothing else in between, yet those who do not fear such suffering are of the nature of vajra! This shows that it is too much. Similarly, seeing a picture of hell, or hearing others tell of it, or remembering what one has experienced before, or reading the scripture that says, "The suffering of hell is like this," or making an image of it in clay or other materials, one will also have great fear. If one personally experiences the ripening of karma, what need is there to say more? In order to arouse renunciation, the Letter to a Friend says: "Sinners, between breaths, experience immeasurable suffering in hell. Having heard this, if one is still not afraid, that mind is like a vajra. Seeing, hearing, remembering, or reading, pictures and statues of hell, even this causes fear. What need is there to say of those who experience unbearable ripening of karma?" Here, the other two lower realms are not described in detail, but only briefly mentioned, in order to experience the combination of words, because they have already been described in the category of unfavorable places, so they are not repeated, because many words and little meaning are unfavorable for treatises. Even so, in order not to contradict showing each their respective nature, as in the Letter to a Friend, therefore, in general, the thirty-six types of pretas who dwell in the depths, and the two types who wander in the sky, these types are classified into two categories, and a general description of the suffering of the pretas who dwell therein is given, namely: The same book says: "Pretas also lack desires, they constantly suffer without interruption, from hunger, thirst, cold, heat, toil, and fear."

The arising is extremely unpleasant, it should be taught as such. Because of hunger and so on, the desire that causes suffering in the mind is never fulfilled, therefore it is constant. Always running around to find food and drink, therefore exhausted. Seeing people holding swords, clubs, and ropes, etc., they appear as executioners, therefore they are afraid. The special suffering is: the hungry ghosts with internal obscurations have stomachs as big as Mount Meru, but mouths as small as the eye of a needle, and their forms are ugly. When they see food and drink, either it is guarded by others, or it disappears as soon as they approach it. Even if they find a little bit of foul vomit and impure things, they cannot eat it because the holes in their mouths are too small, which is extremely painful. As it was said before: Some hungry ghosts have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but their stomachs are as big as mountains, and they are tormented by hunger. Even if they find a little bit of impure waste, they do not have the power to enjoy it. Also, the hungry ghosts with obscurations of food and drink are: on top of the previous suffering, their stomachs burn with fire all night long, and the food also becomes burning sand that falls into their mouths, causing fire to burn inside their bellies, which is extremely painful. Some hungry ghosts burn from their mouths at night, and the food is burning sand that falls into their mouths. The common obscuration is: there is no flesh between the skin and bones, therefore they are emaciated and thin, and naked, like the top of a dried-up palm tree. As it was said before: Some hungry ghosts are skin and bones, naked, like the top of a dried-up palm tree. In particular, those who are called low-class, whose merit has been exhausted: Some low-class hungry ghosts cannot even find pus, feces, and blood, etc., impure things. They scratch each other's faces, and from their throats, tumors grow, and the pus ripens. They cannot even find pus, blood, and feces, etc., and even if they see each other, they scratch each other's faces out of anger, beat each other, and tumors grow on their throats, and when those tumors ripen and turn into pus, they drip into their bellies, and they barely manage to use this as food, which is very pitiful. The hungry ghosts with external obscurations are: the suffering of uneven hot and cold, in the summer, even the moon becomes hot, and in the winter, even the sun becomes cold. Trees and plants, fruits ripening, and branches bending, also disappear as if burned by fire.
