I measured twenty measures of sesame seeds and filled a sesame storehouse without any gaps in between. From the Blister Hell, one sesame seed is taken out every hundred years until they are all gone. At that time, the beings in the Blister Hell might be able to be reborn. Others suffer twenty times more than that and must endure great suffering. The term "multiplied" here means "transformed." The statement that the length of life is fixed in this way is a Hinayana view. In the Mahayana view, the bodhisattva who leads the hell chariot, the strong man, out of compassion for his friend, thinks, "Let me bear this rope as well," and thus generates the compassionate mind to endure the suffering of others. The hell guardian, angered, strikes his head with an iron hammer, and he is suddenly reborn. Similarly, like the daughter of the merchant friend, if a strong antidote arises in the continuum, then it is uncertain. Furthermore, if one despises the Vajra Master, abandons the Dharma, etc., there are also those who cannot be reborn for many great kalpas. Some beings with strong karmic obscurations will not die even from such intense suffering. The Letter to a Friend says: "Such suffering is extremely unbearable, experienced hundreds of thousands of times, but as long as unwholesome deeds are not exhausted, one will not be separated from this life." Now, to explain the Neighborhood Hells: Stunned, limbs severed, enclosed in a doorless place, doors, pillars, stoves, ropes, etc., various forms emanated from karma, endlessly experiencing all kinds of suffering. The Neighborhood Hells are in uncertain places such as mountains, rocks, water, trees, fire, and sky, where the lifespan and suffering are also uncertain, either gathered in large numbers, existing alone, or existing slightly. Because of enduring any kind of suffering such as heat, cold, hunger, thirst, cutting, chopping, striking, fighting, cooking, etc., without any possibility of endurance, they are called Neighborhood Hells. For example, being crushed inside a rock, or in a cliff or hard stone crevice, or freezing stiff in ice and snow, or being boiled in a hot spring, or being roasted in a fire, or in trees and vines.

Being pressed in the mother's womb, floating in the sky, or experiencing half a day, or briefly, or constantly in accordance with karma, like the delusion of suffering, and so on. Among them, experiencing half a day is: as recorded in the Vinaya Pitaka, in the city of Stone (possibly referring to an ancient Indian city), the venerable Kātyāyana advised a butcher to abstain from killing. The butcher accepted the precept of not killing at night. Due to past evil deeds, he was reborn in a temporary hell, suffering during the day and enjoying the pleasures of the gods at night. Experiencing briefly or uncertainly experiencing constantly is: as recorded in the Vinaya Pitaka, later, Maudgalyāyana's son reached the end of the ocean and saw many temporary sentient beings in hell, such as stakes, brooms, trees, etc., suffering greatly. Such as stakes, brooms, sticks, doors, winnows, ropes, stoves, pillars, etc., sometimes or constantly being used and utilized, reborn as beings with delusions, experiencing suffering, for example, the story of the butcher of cows in Rājagṛha (the capital of the ancient Indian kingdom of Magadha, now Rajgir in Bihar), whose foul-smelling bones were pecked at by crows and other creatures. Similarly, if the shape of a tree is cut, the sight of one's own limbs being cut off will appear, thereby experiencing the feeling of pain. As stated in the biography of the venerable Saṃgharakṣita, when the gaṇḍī (a percussion instrument used for timekeeping or gathering the assembly) was struck in a net-like room with a million ears, five hundred Śrāvaka disciples immediately gathered. One person completely cut off another with a sword, and returned in the time it took to hold up an umbrella, seeing countless such scenes. Maudgalyāyana's son said, "There is no happiness in samsara, all beings are like temporary, each tormented by suffering, as if dwelling in a burning flame." In general, the types of hells are summarized into eighteen categories through a definite number, which is widely known in the treatises. Furthermore, in the Ākāśagarbha Sūtra, when discussing the cycle of Avīci hell, it says: Due to the karma of breaking precepts and accepting offerings from faithful patrons, one will also fall into the small hells.
