The lives of beings are constantly on their minds, the majestic hunter with a club in his hand, thinking of nothing but one thing. Like the blissful abundance of the heavens, and the delightful medicinal meadows of the three summer months. The lives of beings, like wild animals relying on constant happiness, are like hunters unseen in the valleys, Yama, the lord of death, holding a club in his hand, from birth to death, entering the woven net in various ways. Moreover, kings, fire, thieves, beasts of prey, weapons, poison, cliffs, severe epidemics, collapses, curses, flesh-eaters, dakinis, nightmares, and other powerful demons, as well as sudden demonic messengers, skilled in the ways of weapons, day and night, relentlessly seize the lives of beings, with their minds set on this one thing, this great harm exists invisibly like a constant wheel, so death is approaching closer day and night, moment by moment. In the Sutra of Advice to Kings, it is also said: Great King, for example, a lion enters a herd of wild animals, seizes the wild animals, and controls them as he pleases. Those wild animals become powerless because they cannot withstand the great power. Great King, similarly, the sword of the Lord of Death pierces the body, losing fatness, without a protector, without refuge, without an army, without friends, without acquaintances, joints separating and breaking, flesh and blood drying up, the body tormented by disease, thirst unquenched, countenance changing, hands and feet trembling, unable to stand, without strength, saliva, snot, urine, vomit covering the body, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind faculties are blocked, hiccups occur, a hoarse sound is emitted, doctors give up, medicine, food, edibles, and drinks are all rejected, preparing to go to another world, lying on the final bed, sinking into the cycle of beginningless birth, aging, and death, life is about to...

Exhausting the one and only body. Yama will feel fear and dread. Falling under the control of the messengers. The breath ceases. The mouth and nose are distorted. The teeth are clenched. Praying, saying, "Give, give." Entering from the existence of karma into existence. Alone, without a companion, without a friend. Abandoning this world. Going to another world. Lifting a great burden. Entering into great darkness. Falling into a great precipice. Entering into a dense thicket. Going to a great solitary place. Being carried away by a great ocean. Being driven by the wind of karma. Going in a direction where there is no foothold. Entering into a great battlefield. Being seized by a great demon. Clinging to the sky. Being surrounded by father, mother, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters. The breath ceases. Saying, "Divide the property." Saying, "Alas, father! Alas, mother! Alas, son!" The hair is disheveled. When generosity, asceticism, and Dharma become the only friends, there is no other refuge besides the Dharma. There is no other protector. There are no other allies. Great king, at that time, the Dharma will become an island, a dwelling, a protector, and a teacher. Great king, at such a time, when one is lying in bed, experiencing the visions of the afterlife, and going to the lower realms, a feeling of dread for that place will arise. At that time, nothing other than the Dharma will become a refuge. Great king, like this your body is completely protected, even if it is well-nurtured, it will still face the moment of death. Great king, like this your body is washed and anointed, fumigated with incense, adorned with fragrant flowers, but it will not be devoured by demons, but will become foul-smelling. Great king, like this even if you are dressed in fine clothes of Kashi silk and silk, when you are on your final bed, you will face the moment of death wearing dirty clothes, and you will depart alone and naked. Great king, even if you are delighted by various qualities of desire, you will abandon all of that and meet the moment of death without being satisfied. Great king, like this you are in your home, with incense, flowers, silk curtains, cushions, and various clothes.

arriving with... even though lying on a bed with pillows on the left and right, you are abandoned in a great cemetery filled with crows, foxes, and disgusting corpses, your body unable to move, lying on the ground to be eaten by demons. Great king, like this, you ride on the backs of elephants and horses, rejoicing in the sweet and delightful sounds of various musical instruments, raising victory banners and umbrellas, praised by kings, ministers, and friends with sweet words, walking while being watched from the front, but before long, you will die in bed, carried by four people, your parents and siblings raising their hands, beating their chests, oppressed by grief, carried out of the city's south gate, and buried under the ground in a wilderness monastery? Eaten by vultures, crows, and foxes, and those bones burned by fire? Thrown into the water? Or buried under the ground? Blown into powder by wind, sun, and rain, scattered in all directions and decaying. Great king, thus all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, thus all are unstable. As it is said, in general, conditioned phenomena are impermanent, especially the life of a person is impermanent, especially the basis of the connection between body and mind is impermanent, for example, villages, towns, and monasteries that were once prosperous and flourishing become empty and desolate. One's own body is like a village and town, the mind is their master, the nature of both the basis and what depends on it having disappeared should be well contemplated. My dwelling and shelter, I wonder when they will become a foundation where even the nests of birds cannot be built, and before long, a sudden and violent cause of death will abandon the appearance of this world, enter the great path of the next life, lie at the end of the bed, consume the last food, and who knows who will say the last words. From the midst of retinue, possessions, and close relatives, the moment of leaving alone should be felt with aversion, as the great scholar Ashvaghosa said: With the things that can prevent death, when all methods are unavailable, do not generate things that prolong happiness, what is the use like a fish in water? On earth or in heaven, has there ever been someone born who has not died, have you ever seen or heard of it?
