Commentary on Chapter Two. Commentary on Chapter Two. Second, explaining the impermanent nature of conditioned phenomena, divided into two parts: generally, explaining the impermanence of the world, including the container, and in particular, explaining the impermanence of sentient beings, who are the essence. The first part is: existence, stability and movement, the four states of formation, duration, destruction, and emptiness, by their nature are designated as the measure of kalpas, having become the realm of destruction, disparaged by name, to cut off transgressions, seven suns and one water will come. Thus it is said. Regarding the world of the container, there are four kalpas: the kalpa of formation, the kalpa of duration, the kalpa of destruction, and the kalpa of emptiness. First, the basis is the five elements, the support is mountains and so on, and the supported are sentient beings. As it is said in the Compendium: Wind relies on space, upon that relies the mass of water, upon that relies this great earth, upon that relies beings. Thus it is said. The nature of space is empty, in the expanse of opening, the functions of the six winds, such as making it solid, become powerful, and the vajra cross of wind, which nothing can destroy, forms on top of the formation, the mandala of water, with the surrounding of the supporting wind, as solid as a vajra. On top of that, the great powerful golden ground, the color is yellow, like a banner rising in the sea, this is the basis. The support is the mixture of water and earth, the churning of clouds and rain, from the essence of bubbles arise mountains and continents, that is, the central Mount Sumeru, the east is crystal or silver, the south is lapis lazuli, the west is ruby, the north is made of gold, therefore its radiance makes the sky of each direction appear like that color. Mount Sumeru rises eighty thousand yojanas from the water, and sinks the same amount inside. It is surrounded by seven golden mountains, among which, the innermost mountain is like the yoke of a chariot, the top is straight, therefore it is called Yoke Holder. In sequence, from then on, the outer mountains are lower and lower by half and half. Like a plowshare, the top is straight, therefore it is called Plowshare Holder. There is a forest of sandalwood trees, therefore it is called Sandalwood Holder. The top is beautiful, therefore it is called Delightful to See. Above, like the ears of a rock horse, hanging sideways, therefore it is called Horse Ears. The top is slightly bent inward, therefore it is called Bent. At the end of everything, it exists like a surrounding, therefore it is called Surrounding Holder. Between those mountains, the eight great nagas play, possessing eight branches and

Because there are seven lakes of play, they are called the Seven Play Lakes. The eight qualities are: As stated in the Vinaya Pitaka: Cool, sweet, light, and soft, clear and without impurities, beneficial to the stomach when drunk, and not harmful to the throat, water with eight qualities is desirable. So it is said. The outer iron fence is made of iron and is equal to half of the Axis-holding Mountain. The great ocean in all the intervals between them is salty. The tops of the four continents and eight subcontinents emerge slightly above the level of the saltwater, and the roots are plunged downwards. The Eastern Continent of Superior Body has the shape of a half-moon. The people there are much taller than the people of Jambudvipa, so it is called Superior Body. The Southern Jambudvipa has the shape of a sword hilt or a chariot facing south. In its center is the Vajra Throne, the place where the last Bodhisattvas attain enlightenment. The Hearers believe that the Bodhi tree grows in the center of the five upward-pointing vajras, and the four corners are adorned with stupas. The Mahayana practitioners believe that the tree grows in the center of the crossed vajras, and the four corners are adorned with vajra kila stupas, which is the place where all the Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon attain enlightenment. They believe that even the seven fires and one water cannot harm it, and it exists like a banner hanging in the sky. That Bodhi tree was a banyan tree when the Buddha of Light attained enlightenment in the past, and it is considered an Ashoka tree when Shakyamuni Buddha attains enlightenment now. In the future, when Maitreya Buddha attains enlightenment, its name will change to a thousand kinds such as Naga Tree, or it will be considered that the location will change. The West is the Continent of Enjoyment of Cows, where cows and elephants are largely enjoyed, and its shape is round. In the North, seven days before death, the sound "You will die" comes from the wish-fulfilling tree, so it is called the Continent of Unpleasant Sound, and its shape is square. The subcontinents are half the size of the main continents and are located on the left and right of each. The Eastern Continent of Superior Body has the Body Continent and the Small Superior Body Continent. The Southern Jambudvipa has the Five Heavenly Continents and the Five Heavenly Other Continents. The Western Continent of Cowherds has the Moving Continent and the Superior Path Moving Continent. The Northern Kuru has the Unpleasant Sound Continent and the Companion of the Unpleasant Sound Continent.
