The rhythm of breath is like the swaying of a horse's tail. The Lord of Death, with his sharp axe of enmity, severs life. Abandoning beauty, revealing teeth, one enters the dark abyss of karmic fate. Alas, the aggregates of conditioned existence are defeated on the battlefield of Yama, just as when a Chandala in India slaughters a buffalo, a companion is driven into a cave with no escape. Even the powerful Vajrapani cannot offer protection or refuge. The beauty of youth, constantly served and venerated, fades like a flower struck by hail. The power of the aggregation of the elements extinguishes the functions of the five senses like a butter lamp in the wind. The pain in the vital points cannot be cured by medicine. Even when a young physician is present with remedies, one can only watch helplessly, eager to flee. The supporting energy wind weakens, so that even the essence cannot support the limbs. The breath is disordered within the body, and breathing focuses solely on exhalation.

If you meditate on it a lot, it is as if all the Buddhas are exhaling. If you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is as if all the Buddhas are prophesying. If you meditate on impermanence a lot, it is as if all the Buddhas are blessing you. For example, among all the footprints, the elephant's footprint is the most excellent. Similarly, among all the meditative concepts of Buddhists, only the concept of meditating on impermanence is the most excellent. It is said. Therefore, those Bodhisattvas who are engaged in benefiting others should also rely on this path to attain realization. All the activities of ordinary people should be mixed with the Dharma of impermanence. As it is said in the Hundred Deeds Sutra: Always, in all activities, remember the Lord of Death. And as it is said in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: Day and night, at all times, I should only contemplate this. It is said. In general, since the aggregation of body and mind is impermanent, do not cling to borrowed things as your own. When walking, since the road is impermanent, direct your steps towards the Dharma. When staying, since the place is impermanent, bring to mind the pure realms. Since food, drink, and possessions are impermanent, take samadhi as your food. When sleeping, since sleep is impermanent, purify illusions into clear light. When wealthy, since wealth is impermanent, attend to the seven noble riches. Since relatives, friends, and retinues are impermanent, encourage yourself to seek liberation in solitude. Since power and fame are impermanent, always maintain a humble position. Since spoken words are impermanent, encourage yourself to recite and read. Since faith and renunciation are impermanent, strive to keep your vows firm. Since concepts and thoughts are impermanent, train in a good foundation. Since experiences and realizations are impermanent, guide your nature to the point of exhaustion. Having become accustomed to this, the extent of abandoning attachment is like a ship sinking in the ocean, or a boat capsizing in a river, or being pressed down by waves while swimming, or being deceived by a ferryman in a dangerous place, or entering a nest of poisonous snakes, or having an arrow pierce your heart, or a criminal being handed over to an executioner, or a prey being cornered, or a large fish being caught in a net, or meeting a savage face to face, or falling into the throat of a crocodile, or entering the island of a Rakshasa. When aversion to the phenomena of samsara arises from the depths of your heart, the mind that clings to permanence...

The earth shakes. The bias of enemies and friends is destroyed. The rope of distraction is cut. Diligence arises from strength. Whatever is done becomes Dharma. The two accumulations increase further. Unprecedented qualities arise. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas also constantly contemplate it. Among all qualities, it is the most supreme. As stated in the Vinaya Pitaka: Giving umbrellas and food to a hundred monks is not as supreme as a moment of thinking about the impermanence of conditioned things. In short, worldly wealth, the discipline of vows, the qualities of scriptures, and all the yoga of generation and completion stages, the reason for wasting them in the bardo is also because impermanence has not arisen from the mindstream. Because there is no contentment with possessions, attachment does not turn into merit. Because one has not remained in the vow of renunciation, one degenerates from the nature of individual liberation, and here, being deceived by attachment and aversion, hearing and thinking become the work of demons. Being attached to wandering villages and subduing ghosts obscures the supreme accomplishment. Therefore, among all perceptions, the most supreme is the practice of impermanence. This, like the reins and whip of a clever horse going on the path of higher realms and definite goodness, should generate certainty. From the Treasury of Precious Qualities, the chapter on Impermanence, commentary on the second chapter.
