One should generate the mind of serving the Lama with a happy mind, respect, cherishing, and loving. Because the mind generated in this way is conditioned, if one repeatedly cultivates it with the capable proximate cause of one's own mind, then even if the disciple's qualities are not complete at first, they will naturally become complete later. How to cultivate? Extremely guarding the Lama is virtuous, not being angry at instructions like a fine horse. Like a boat, abandoning weariness in going and coming, like a bridge, bearing all good and bad. Like a craftsman's bench, enduring any heat or cold, like a servant, listening to instructions. Abandoning pride like a broom, abandoning arrogance like a hornless yak. "Relying on the Lama" is said in the scriptures. Also, the merchant's son Norzang relied on one hundred and twelve spiritual friends, as it says in the biography of Paljung: "Son of lineage, Bodhisattvas who are taken care of by spiritual friends will never fall into the lower realms. Always looking at the face of the spiritual friend with the mind of a virtuous son, not being angry at the Lama's instructions like a dog, not being tired of coming and going like a boat, bearing all good and bad like a bridge, enduring all the suffering of heat and cold like a blacksmith's anvil." Similarly, it is said in the sutras: "One should rely on the spiritual friend with the mind of a servant listening to the Lama's instructions. One should rely on the spiritual friend with the mind of a servant doing what is agreeable to us. One should rely on the spiritual friend with the mind of a broom abandoning pride. One should rely on the spiritual friend with the mind of a hornless yak abandoning arrogance." Furthermore, it is also said in the Avatamsaka Sutra: "Son of lineage, towards your spiritual friend, generate the mind like the earth, not being weary of all burdens, the mind like a vajra, not being shaken by all harm, the mind like a disciple, not disobeying all instructions, the mind like a servant, listening to all commands, and the mind like a hornless yak, without arrogance." Thus it is said. If there is wealth, then offer to the Fourth Jewel, and respectfully serve with body, speech, and mind.

All acts of verbal expression are never wasted. Among the three kinds of satisfaction, practice is the best. Giving is a sacred field for receiving a vast essence, accumulating merit, and also an excellent and supreme place of merit, because all three jewels are gathered there, therefore the noble Lama is praised with the fourth expression. As it says in the Buddha Samyoga Tantra: "Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the Lama is also the fourth." And the great teacher also said that the Lama is the nature of all mandalas: "The Lama is the Buddha, the Lama is the Dharma, likewise, the Lama is the Sangha, the Lama is the unsurpassed actor, the Lama is the great glorious Heruka." The meaning of this is that the unchanging nature of the Buddha is the Dharmakaya that possesses all the best qualities, and it cannot be attained by any other means without relying on the Lama, therefore it is also said in the Do Gongdu Sutra: "The Buddhas of hundreds of thousands of kalpas, should know the teacher as most important. Why do all the Buddhas of kalpas, arise by relying on teachers?" This is in accordance with what is taught in the Kalachakra. Because of this, all the Buddhas of the ten directions also pay homage and praise to the virtuous person who possesses the qualities, as it was said before: "To the meaningful wise one, in all times of the three times, the Sugatas and Victors abiding in the ten directions, all come and pay homage with praise and respect." Similarly, when noble beings are born, pass into nirvana, ascend from ground to ground, and show special deeds, the earth shakes, and many visible phenomena such as rainbows, lights, and sounds occur, which are also signs of the joy and gathering of gods, nagas, yakshas, and others who delight in the teachings, as it was said before: "Bodhisattvas, gods, and humans, likewise nagas and yakshas, and rakshasas with wrong views, all the vidyadharas gather, scattering emanated flowers, Lama, virtuous spiritual friend, you are the father of us all." And so on, it is widely spoken. With definitive words, only the Lama is said to be the supreme field, as it was said before: "Therefore, for a thousand Buddhas, kalpa
