Those who are skilled in deceptive pretense harbor thoughts and views of deceiving the Dharma and the Guru from the very beginning. Although they have no renunciation or devotion, they pretend to be respectful. They think, "I must obtain such instructions and transmissions from this teacher by various means, otherwise, we surpass him in lineage, appearance, or wealth, and (if we don't obtain them) it will harm my merit and glory." They do not think of the kindness of the Guru, the source of Dharma, and are like hunters. They view the Dharma as a wage and, after hearing a little through various means, they ultimately abandon shame and embarrassment in guarding their vows, like hunters. Such people themselves will be short-lived and inauspicious, and will wander in the lower realms after death. The Guru's life, activities, and benefit to others will also be harmed, and the lineage of Dharma will be flawed. Therefore, examining a person's character is very important. As it is said in the commentary on the "Three Statements on Samaya": "Those who slander the Vajra Guru, exchange Dharma for wealth, and do not protect their vows with reason, will be short-lived in this life, their fortune and good luck will decline, they will suffer from the punishment of the Dakinis, and will fall into the lower realms in the future." Furthermore, those who are narrow-minded and ignorant abandon the essential points of the instructions they have received, and ultimately tire of searching for various written materials. As a result, they neither see the new nor retain the old. There are also those who are very broad-minded, thinking that they must hear all the Dharma, but they do not practice what they have heard, and only collect written materials. Without any clear understanding of the difference between Dharma and non-Dharma, they like to make arbitrary comments and engage in fault-finding. For such people, not even a single blessing from the Guru's lineage can enter their hearts, and the blessings that have previously entered will vanish like mist. Instructions that are not practiced and are held with doubt do not benefit either oneself or others. This is like the hunter chasing the wild boar in the story of the Brahmin woman. It is important to carefully examine the characteristics of these three states: faith that applies the Dharma to its true meaning, desire to practice for the sake of this life, and ambiguous attitudes that are not clearly directed towards either. In general, merely entering the Dharma is not enough to be certain; one must enter with faith.

Among the three ways of entering: through faith, through desire, and through indifference, entering through faith means: understanding that the Lama and the sacred Dharma are mutually dependent in nature, possessing renunciation, delighting in supports and offerings, making offerings to the Three Jewels, being generous in giving, and genuinely engaging in listening, contemplation, and meditation with the motivation of faith. Such individuals benefit both themselves and others in the short and long term. Entering through desire means: relying on the Lama and Dharma temporarily due to the desire for happiness, fame, and the three pleasant things of this life, and the negative motivations of attachment and aversion, but without focusing on the thought of liberation from samsara, not entrusting the mind to meditation, seeking gain through empowerment or transmission, engaging in activities devoid of altruistic intention, or cultivating poisonous listening and contemplation driven by various activities, arrogance, and jealousy. They do not delight in making offerings to the Three Jewels, have no interest in the generation and completion stages, and merely adorn supports and offerings. These are called those who deceive both themselves and others through desire. Entering through indifference means: foolish and biased individuals who do not rely on either of the above two approaches, lacking both faith and desire for the Dharma, merely imitating what others do like a monkey's meditation or a parrot's mantra, and going with the flow, never taking any vows or commitments, like a homeless stray dog wandering the streets. Therefore, the first approach is faultless and should be followed, while the latter two should be transformed into the correct path through various skillful means and dependent connections, and cherished as objects of future taming through special connections of aspiration. Having explained the unsuitable aspects of disciples, we now begin to discuss the initial examination of a worthy vessel, starting with the characteristics of excellence: clad in armor, with extremely firm wisdom, disregarding body and life, diligently serving, revering whatever is said, and not cherishing oneself. Such a person is liberated solely through devotion and respect. Thus, although the profound sutras and tantras reveal many secrets regarding the characteristics of the Lama and disciples, and the essential points of practice, when condensed into one key point, this is the obvious reason: one must tame one's own mind-stream through a Lama who has realized transcendence from samsara.
