Those who do not have even a little vessel to hold the profound essence of phenomena such as arising, do not see the qualities of the lama. They themselves are not subdued, and all the evil thoughts that generate defilements are seen as the lama's faults. If they receive generosity and gain from the lama's property, offerings, and enjoyments, a little new faith and respect will increase, but that is also conditioned, and like the changes of the four seasons, they cannot even determine whether it is morning or afternoon. To such a person, one should first earnestly urge: You will experience happiness in both this life and the next, enter the path of the Dharma! But like approaching an unruly mountain goat, the more you persuade, the more it runs away. Even if they enter the Dharma in the middle, they become annoyed just by hearing the words hearing, thinking, and meditating, and think that they have entered the door of the Dharma for the sake of the great affairs of this life. Finally, when they are slightly interested in hearing, thinking, and meditating, they think that the greatest merit and gain in these three realms is the supreme Dharma, and even obtaining the position of Brahma and a wheel-turning king cannot compare to it. Therefore, the evil demon is very distressed, because he fears that even if one sentient being in the desire realm attains Buddhahood, his territory will be reduced. When the mind cannot be controlled, the demon's arrow pierces the heart. As it says in the Vajrasekhara Sutra: "Obstacles do not come from elsewhere, one's own mind is the demon." Like this, the first entrance to going astray is to have all kinds of thoughts in front of the lama, feel uncomfortable, and think: There is a better practice than this, there is a more suitable place for seclusion than this. In this way, they deceive the lama and Dharma friends with words and thoughts. As soon as they leave the monastery, the mind is unleashed. At that time, all directions are filled with children and sinful friends, and by associating and befriending them, even if the Dharma is slightly damaged, or even if it is not damaged, his thoughts are like a wild man at the edge of the forest, controlled by the three poisons of desire, attachment, and ignorance. His behavior is like the tip of a kusha grass being bent and swayed by the wind, and he will become mixed up with those people. Therefore, when staying in the presence of the holy ones, he thinks of running away.

E. Wherever you go, sin will seize you in every direction. If you are specifically urged to be secluded, it will destroy the rules of Dharma practice. Like the tip of a kusha grass following the wind. (Monkey Year) Like this, the disciple's disposition and thoughts, and the measure of their mind, are known only by the lama himself. Therefore, whether you are urged to be secluded, or urged to benefit beings, or to remain in your own place, whichever of the three is prophesied, if you accomplish it, there will be no obstacles. Unless the disciple himself requests it, and the virtuous friend grants permission, one should never be separated from the virtuous friend. As it says in the General Sutra: Therefore, never be separated from the excellent guide, just as the body and its shadow. By associating with the wise, one becomes virtuous. And the merchant's daughter, Norzang, followed the noble Manjushri and praised him, saying: The noble one said, associating with the lama and serving him is the basis for accomplishing great enlightenment, so do not be weary of relying on and associating with him. Our teacher, when passing into nirvana between two sala trees, did not separate from the fourfold assembly, nor did he cut off the gate of Dharma that thoroughly reverses from the five aggregates. As it says in the Avatamsaka Sutra: All the lamps of the world who have not yet come, they will successively attain enlightenment, turn the wheel of Dharma, and show the end of perfect peace in nirvana. I pray to the presence of all protectors. Even in future lives, may I aspire to be like the youth Norzang, relying only on virtuous friends. The commentary on the aspiration to become the conduct of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva in future lives, and the treatise of the Elephant of the Regions, etc., should also be consulted. Furthermore, a person of bad character, with deceitful words, approaches the lama like an incense elephant, and after obtaining the benefit of the excellent Dharma, shoots the vows at the hunter with joy. Therefore, first of all, the disciple should not be too arrogant or too stubborn. It is very important to have a good character, because if one has a good character, one can rely on the accumulation of merit such as faith and wisdom to increase from above. But a person of bad character is difficult to tame, speaks one thing and thinks another, their thoughts and actions are inconsistent, they are difficult to please and are jealous, their afflictions are coarse and their antidotes are weak.
