Beating, whipping, stabbing with weapons, and all kinds of killing, may all these beings attain the bliss of enlightenment and realize the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Speak this from the depths of your heart. Like this, the people of the southern continent of Jambudvipa, because they have two needs to sustain life, cannot but rely on coarse food. Therefore, those who have entered the path of the teachings, even if they only possess these three aspects of pure food—preparation, main practice, and subsequent action—can make leisure meaningful. To steal food in an impure way, to obtain it through deception, to cover up with sweet words, to measure what is obtained by improper means, these five kinds of wrong livelihood will defile the conduct of upright practitioners. Therefore, a good dwelling and good food, good friends and good actions, can inspire inner strength. Regarding wrong livelihood, it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: Do not learn the arts of craftsmanship, do not engage in buying and selling, do not rely on kings and princes, as well as ministers and merchants, for food. Do not eat the food of the dead and newborn's house, do not associate with happy and friendly people, do not mix with monks and nuns, a yogi should not do this. As it is said in the sutra, whatever is done with an afflicted mind for the sake of survival, and through which one sustains life, this is called wrong livelihood. Similarly, to maintain life by buying and selling for the sake of gain, to maintain life by preaching the Dharma, to maintain life by practicing medicine, to acquire knowledge through divination and other means, through the application of mantras, through observing signs, through astrology, through diviners, through hypocritical behavior, and through any unwholesome actions, to maintain life through craftsmen, through messengers, through flowers, through fruits, through roots, through leaves, through toothpicks, etc., these are all wrong livelihoods. These have been extensively explained in the commentary on wrong livelihood. Here, five specific wrong livelihoods are pointed out: In order to receive alms, begging in front of others with bad language, or hiding food and clothing and pretending to be poor so that others know, everything obtained in this way is impure food, and this is called stealing by means.

Seeking gain through gain is: first giving away a small amount of food, using this to control the other party so they don't change their mind, and then collecting a lot of gain in return later. Seeking gain through flattery is: in front of others, saying how diligently one has studied, contemplated, and meditated, how one has fled from merit and busyness, and claiming that one has abandoned wealth or possessions, or saying that one has saved the lives of fish and deer and other sentient beings, or using offerings, generosity, and vast virtuous deeds as an excuse, deceiving others with lies to obtain gain. Seeking gain through hypocrisy is: even though one's own nature is unrestrained, untamed, lax, eats a lot, has fallen from vows, and is unjust, in front of others one pretends to be of peaceful conduct, gentle speech, dignified expression, steady, lax, and upright, or pretending to be indifferent to the eight worldly concerns (gain, loss, ruin, fame, praise, criticism, suffering, and happiness), acting crudely, speaking seemingly honestly but being two-faced, disguising oneself with small, hypocritical motivations, confusing others and then obtaining gain. Measuring by what is obtained is: so-and-so patron gave me this much wealth or these items, and the reason they gave it to me is because they saw that I possess discipline, learning, proficiency in yoga, noble lineage, ancestry, and birth, an excellent reincarnation residence, and the qualities of a sthavira (elder). To this, I would also directly say, I accepted it because I felt close and loving towards them. Or conveying it through letters, or forcibly taking it when the other party is unwilling to give, or complaining that offerings are scarce in remote places. Or saying that I have recited and chanted this much, calculating what has been obtained. The Bhagavan said: The giver gives well, the receiver receives well. But some people don't take this to heart at all, and not only do they not rejoice in the generosity of others, but they also get angry and quarrel over getting even a little bit, burning their own and others' minds. This way of obtaining is measuring by what is obtained. These are all wrong livelihoods, like poison, full of defilement, and a great cause for falling into the lower realms. It is better to die of starvation than to eat them shamelessly, as is said in worldly tales.
