That is, virtuous spiritual friends and virtuous companions are what completely perfect the conduct of Brahman. Why is that? Because, Ananda, those who are subject to birth, by relying on virtuous spiritual friends, are completely liberated from birth. Thus it was taught. Among these, "conduct of Brahman" refers to Nirvana. Because one practices for that purpose, it is the conduct of Brahman, that is, the path. From that path, in order to obtain the peaceful state of fruition. The teacher Aryadeva also said: Relying on virtuous spiritual friends is the conduct of Brahman. The Buddha spoke of it as being able to completely perfect it. One should rely on a supreme individual for the sake of the supreme. Having relied on them, many obtain peace. Thus it was shown. By the Teacher's giving, merit is generated in others. I also will not degenerate in asceticism, beggars are like wish-fulfilling jewels. It is only harmonious alms. Among these, those who wish to accomplish the benefit of themselves and others should abandon all attachment to all possessions. One should rely on alms for sustenance. By relying on it, one can perfect a large retinue, one's own activities are reduced, one does not need to be mindful of others' faces, one is not bound by activities such as trade and agriculture, pride and arrogance are reduced, and there are many qualities such as pure living. Our Teacher, in order to ensure that those who enter the teachings in the future are not bound by livelihood and are without afflictions, cut off and abandoned all attachment to lineage, appearance, power, and enjoyment, even abandoning the kingdom of a universal monarch and going forth, relying solely on alms for sustenance. Those in the snowy mountains whose lineage has declined, who are not friends with the seven qualities of the heavens, and who are like optical illusions, changing between superior and inferior based solely on the difference between wealth and poverty, will not look down on alms. In the sutra it says: When the Tathagata is seen walking for alms, countless sentient beings are filled and intoxicated with enjoyment and power, and filled and intoxicated with appearance, lineage, livelihood, and health, they think to themselves: The universal monarch has abandoned his kingdom and gone forth, walking for alms. They also think like this:
