Abandoning seven steps. This is even more superior in merit. Moreover, in a very clear and joyful forest, with little hardship and happiness, which pacifies all distractions, one should live alone. Thus it is said, and it will be explained in detail below. The mind is like a very stiff cat, walking peacefully and behaving properly. A place of easeful reliance on evil friends, even if perfect, will immediately cause one to fall away from the Dharma. Just as a cat's mind is very wicked, difficult to tame, and only does harm, yet it is skilled in walking and sitting, and its behavior is gentle and proper, so wherever people with malicious thoughts, who hold inverted views on cause and effect, do not trust the Three Jewels, and only rely on evil, only aiming to temporarily remove obstacles, and outwardly respect the Dharma and practitioners, the place occupied by such people, and those beginners who are not supported by skillful means and compassion, even if they associate with and befriend those who enjoy gambling, gathering at licentious feasts, are unwilling to do good solely because of laziness, possess the enjoyment of wine, which is a vessel of many faults, wander from one house to another at night, and only delight in non-virtue, then from the clothes of their faction, they will fall away from the Dharma. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Gambling and watching gatherings, laziness, relying on evil friends, drinking and wandering at night are the causes of falling into the lower realms, and because fame is damaged, one should abandon these six. These six are the cause of falling into the lower realms, therefore they are called lower realms, which is the name of the result. The Sutra says: Sons of the householder, these six are the gates to the lower realms. Here it is explained that these six are all present in one evil friend. Like the sun and moon moving swiftly, being friendly with all, being close and constantly dwelling, yet being tormented by anger. In a new land, everything is gentle, and all beings are seen as friends. The sun and moon do not only shine on one continent, but circle Mount Meru every day, causing joy to the beings of all four continents, so those who act according to the Dharma should also do so.

Wherever, in the short time of associating and befriending people, if one moves to another place, one will not transcend the realm of attachment and aversion, and will be welcomed by everyone. As it is said in the Jataka: Mostly, complete familiarity breeds aversion, Always seeking new things. All who dwell far away, Are welcomed by everyone. Thus it is said, if it is indeed necessary, or one must stay involuntarily, then for those who live nearby, and for the local residents and the beautiful friends of the family, do not make them weary, be humble and respectful, keep a low profile, and protect with the wisdom of the wise, so that neither your own nor others' thoughts will be hurt. Furthermore, Like sentient beings, although they may make noisy sounds, But the goodness or badness of speech depends on their minds. Not like the echo of a cliff, Those with virtuous conduct do not break the vows of the place. Just like the echo of a cliff, although it repeats whatever is said like someone with discriminating wisdom, But it has no discriminating wisdom to distinguish between good and bad, attachment and aversion. Similarly, those who can subdue the senses that arise from the objects of the five senses, with thoughts of acceptance and rejection, are called those who are equal to the environment. Even in the midst of turmoil, because discipline, mindfulness, and contemplation do not miss the opportunity, just as practitioners who have been passed down through generations, with the light of practice, regard even the king's palace as a solitary place, one should strive for the Dharma and the benefit of sentient beings regardless of time and place. Others, however, rely solely on place and friends, thus creating a situation of high and low: Those who have equal conduct of Brahmacharya, And those who focus solely on the meaning of meditation, Before firmly establishing practice, whoever they are, Rely on place and friends, thus creating high and low. Just like this, practicing Brahmacharya, and generating the Noble Path, requires staying away from the bad environment just mentioned, and especially relying on the auxiliary conditions of the excellent virtuous friend. The noble Ananda said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, just like this, a virtuous friend and a good companion are half of Brahmacharya. The Blessed One said: Ananda, do not say that a good friend is half of Brahmacharya. Ananda, just like this
