Residing in a secluded place, relying on a noble person, having made good aspirations for oneself, and having accumulated merit in the past, you possess the four great wheels. As the last line indicates, even the king's enjoyment is a vessel for entering the path of the noble ones. Now, in order to fully distinguish its nature, like poisonous food in the midst of a crowd, the transformations of environment and circumstances are extremely fierce. Guarding oneself from them, one delights in solitude and peace, not clinging to gain, like the wind and sky-goers. Thus, royal palaces, cities, towns, villages, and so on, or even monasteries used in degenerate times, in the midst of many gatherings, enemies and friends, attachment and aversion, partiality, strife, trade, agriculture, noise, gain and honor, distraction, jealousy, competition, arrogance, accumulation, protection, propagation, and so on, the transformations encountered by approaching circumstances with the environment are deceived by the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance, and are full of the causes of affliction. As Vasubandhu said: When subtle scattering is not abandoned, and the environment becomes close, due to improper attention, the cause of affliction is complete. Thus, when the bhikshu Good Giving, whose mind of guarding the precepts was extremely firm, had a householder woman lying in front of him, he strongly forbade her, saying, "I am guarding the precepts, do not stay here," but she did not listen. Even a firm vow is conditioned, and the poison of the environment is so powerful that how could he not develop attachment and engage in adultery with the householder woman? Therefore, having entered the gate of the teachings, although one has a firm intention of renunciation and guarding the vows, when encountering various kinds of environmental circumstances, all the causes and qualities for the arising of discipline, samadhi, and wisdom will be lost. Thus, by holding the environment as a permanent dwelling place, one grasps the land and territory as one's own. By being manifestly attached to places, one engages in the castle works of the great house, having abandoned the small house, and by seeing wealth as the essence, one even competes with powerful patrons for horse fodder, and wastes offerings of faith and the wealth of the dead solely for the sake of gain, which is not good.

Thus it is. In the Sutra, it says: Regarding loving-kindness, great Bodhisattvas should consider that gain and respect increase attachment. It should be observed that gain and respect are bad and destructive. Gain and respect completely abandon meditation and immeasurable qualities, causing beings to fall into hell, the animal realm, and the world of Yama. Therefore, one should have few desires and not be completely harmed. As it is said, not being attached to gain is like the wind in the sky; not holding onto dwelling and seeking, like a bird soaring in the sky, one should practice the path of peace. Stay away from crowds and be extremely fond of peace. Like the wind in the sky, do not be attached to gain; like a wild animal, wander alone without fear. Such a person is a holder of the sacred Dharma. So it is said. Furthermore, residing in solitude like a wild animal will not be disturbed by reckless behavior. If one relies on a dwelling, one will have to protect the faces of others, and jealousy will diminish the courage of patience. Therefore, a solitary place or a sacred forest, whose natural behavior is very gentle and peaceful, cannot be disturbed by hundreds of faults of assembly and reckless cunning behavior. If one stays in one place, one will suffer from the burden of taxes dependent on that place, or one will not be able to satisfy the faces of others in order to protect oneself and be complete. Even if one becomes famous for practicing the Dharma, or becomes wealthy due to naturally compatible causes, the discrimination of sentient beings in the degenerate age is very unruly. Seeing them repeatedly tormenting with various intolerant behaviors, our asceticism of patience will also diminish. Therefore, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas praise only the virtues of forests and monasteries. As stated in the *Moon Lamp Sutra*: After renouncing, no matter how one practices the Dharma, one will not serve and respect the supreme Buddhas with food, drink, clothing, flowers, incense, and garlands. If someone intensely desires Bodhi and goes to a solitary place for the benefit of sentient beings born from bad causes
