Kante. Those diseases that arise from imbalance, aggregation, or interdependence and mixture make the pool of a balanced body turbid. What is called being sick is: the suffering of illness in the body; the feeling of knowing that it is suffering; the interruption of the connection of consciousness; action is treating one disease, and another disease arises; consciousness experiences the essence of pain, and all five aggregates of clinging are suffering. Therefore, the mind is disturbed, and all joyful states are reversed. Being sick is a great fear, as it is necessarily a precursor to death. The upper commentary of the Hundred Deeds says: A body tormented by illness is like the feeling of hell. The suffering of death is: In this world, the value of life is immeasurable, so the suffering of death afflicts relatives and friends and enjoyment, and everything passes away meaninglessly. Even if all the wealth of the world is piled up, it cannot measure the value of life. Therefore, there is never any escape from the suffering of death. Lying at the end of the bed, facing the moment of lifting heavy steps. No matter how much territory, enjoyment, residence, relatives, friends, children, retinue, food, clothing, etc. one has, one cannot take even a small part. It does not follow, nor is it abandoned, and there is no control over the next life. Even surrounded by a gathering of relatives, one can only endure that intense pain alone. In an unwilling state, memory fades, consciousness is confused, and breathing stops. In the bardo, which does not belong to any of the six realms of existence, there is no protection or refuge, the form aggregate is abandoned, and it is the aggregate of the four aggregates. The image of the mind-body habit, all feelings are suffering, and when all appearances appear as fear, the cherished body is bound by ropes, trampled by feet, and unhappily goes and gathers in the cemetery. Even if one has the enjoyment of a wheel-turning king, one faces the moment of being devoured. Relatives bring suffering, but people place their hopes on wealth. At that time, the only things that follow are karma and habits, so why not be sad about it?

In the letter of Kanishka (in Sanskrit) it says: When the Lord of Death leads away, except for virtue and vice, all beings return, and no one will follow you. Please know this and act well. It also says: For all beings, life is precious; for all beings, living is suffering. Everything has the nature of death, and everything is tormented by suffering. Then there is the suffering of meeting an unloved enemy: The suffering of meeting an unloved place, those who are tormented and degraded by messengers, like the rest of a resting place that has collapsed, are even more dangerous because they cannot get a breath. Like this, the nature of sentient beings is to be accustomed to what should not be done, and very few have the discrimination of shame and embarrassment, and are taken by the holy protector, so it is natural to be accustomed to harm. As it was said before: In this world, wisdom, even if it becomes weak, without a protector, for doing what should not be done, demons will not hesitate to intervene. If one is only devoted to destroying the fruits of happiness for oneself and others, relying on the companionship of children and the faults of the place, we have no asceticism of patience. For the ritual of the wise's wisdom protection, the unwise look at others as enemies, whether visibly or invisibly, and cruelly persecute the body, enjoyment, and life, thereby creating great suffering in body and mind, just like the resting place of a person crushed by a burden collapses. Furthermore, there is the suffering of separation from loved ones. The new arrangement of love and sorrow, the asceticism weakened by suffering transformed into form, controlled by the Gandharva woman of excellent wealth, covered by a dangerous path, is even longer than the end of karma. If one is separated from parents who love and benefit oneself, or from friends who are dear to the heart, remembering their qualities, behavior, and demeanor, the mind will be very painful, and this painful asceticism is even longer than the end of karma for a young man bound by the ropes of infatuation with the Gandharva woman of excellent wealth, walking on a dangerous path. As it says in the Wish-Fulfilling Vine: Those sentient beings who are attached to the taste of the world and tormented by ignorance, alas, from the happiness of home, few arise with a sense of renunciation and turn outward.
