Those who delight in strife and practice generosity will be transformed into the independent ones of the Asuras. ( इति ) Now, to explain the suffering of humans: the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of conditioning—these are the three great fundamental sufferings. Birth, aging, sickness, death, encountering enemies and the unpleasant, separation from loved ones, not attaining what is desired, and the five aggregates of clinging holding the characteristic of suffering, constantly tormenting in eight ways. To explain the suffering of suffering: "Life is like a floating bubble, people often due to displeasure and conflicts, etc., the former suffering leads to the latter, like a leper with new sores on top of old wounds." Thus, wise individuals, compared to the previous Fortunate Aeon, or compared to other human beings, this Jambudvipa, now in a time of decline, with life as impermanent as a water bubble, is inherently filled with the suffering of sorrow. Moreover, it is compounded by sudden illnesses, demons, enemies, and the calamities of earth, water, fire, and wind, and many other sufferings. Nevertheless, most people, due to lack of careful consideration, fail to foresee future suffering. This is like a person suffering from a severe illness, destined to be devoured by beasts, or like a leper with new pain added to old wounds. The suffering of change: "In the garden of perfect excellence and merit, craving the taste of desire, yet tormented by poisonous food, the body of asceticism is easily destroyed like an illusion, this is the suffering of change." Whoever, in gardens or palaces, etc., indulges in play, dance, and song, enjoying comfort, or accidentally ingests food mixed with poison, leading to physical weakness, impaired vision, being bedridden, and suffering torment, the body quickly weakens and suffers greatly. Or like someone enthusiastic about art, whose body is easily injured by art itself. The suffering of conditioning: a universally pervasive suffering. "Feet weary and unable to bear the burden, even climbing the elephant's back with labored effort,

Becoming wild due to desire, like a lowly one on a cliff, symbolizes the suffering of formation. Regarding this meaning, a story and example from a previous life are cited: In the capital of the king named Radiant, King Bright felt joy in mounting an elephant's back, and said to the elephant trainer: 'Hey, be wise! This excellent elephant is obtained through the power of merit that cannot bear our feet touching the ground, you must tame it.' The elephant trainer replied, 'As the divine command.' So, he listened to the instruction of striking the burning flames with an iron hammer, which the elephant's trunk also accepted without hesitation, and continued to tame it. Then, the king and subjects rode together on the elephant's back, enjoying the pleasure of touring the nearby countryside, but all the causes of suffering oneself were due to the invisible formations. Some elephants, although restrained by the vows of the supreme teacher to subdue afflictions, were not tamed in their minds, but the elephant trainer only tamed their bodies with an iron hook. Therefore, when they smelled the scent of a female elephant, their desires became extremely wild, so that the entire earth seemed to spin like a chariot wheel, causing dizziness. King Bright nearly lost his life and experienced great suffering. Therefore, the suffering of formation is largely invisible to all sentient beings. Thus, the three great fundamental sufferings are like a vast wilderness, where sentient beings wander according to their respective karmas. There, birth, old age, sickness, death, and the like, in eight forms, torment people. Therefore, the three sufferings in the wilderness, the feelings of birth, old age, sickness, and death wander about. Meeting undesirable people and enemies, imprinting suffering in the mind, going to uninhabitable places. Being amazed by obtaining desired objects, asceticism gathers on the aggregates of appropriation. The torment of the eight sufferings constantly devastates the vine of human life.' After briefly stating this, in order to distinguish the individual natures in detail, the suffering of birth is first described: Extremely filthy, impure, turbid, narrow everywhere, in the midst of thick darkness.
