There. From the Karma Differentiation: 'Ordinary sandalwood at the end of time, and the hellfires as well, in order, likewise suffering increases sevenfold.' Thus, the feeling also becomes coarser by sevenfold, and suffering also increases greatly by sevenfold each time. Now, in order to explain the retinue and the remaining surrounding hells of those, from suffering itself, the conceptual thought that exhales, the doors of the surrounding hells open, a pit of burning embers, thick putrid mud, and a forest of swords, a river without measure, struck by the hail of the Lord of Death. Thus, sentient being hells, each of the eight great hells has four directions, respectively: a pit of burning embers, putrid mud, a forest of sword leaves, and a river without measure. Each set of four exists as a retinue, and is called the sixteen remaining hells. As it is said in the commentary on the 'Friendly Epistle': 'These four remaining hells exist in order at the four doors of all sentient being hells. Therefore, each of the eight great sentient being hells that will be explained has sixteen remaining hells.' So it is said. Above, when the karma to be experienced is mostly lessened, one feels that the doors in the four directions are opening, and when the appearance of escaping arises, mistaking ashes for a river and burning, from the mindfulness of near attainment, it says: 'After going that way, the thought of a river arises, and as soon as one crosses, the flesh up to the waist is burned. The bones are also shattered and separated, and then one revives again, and on the banks, the offspring of the Lord of Death, who previously frolicked, appear to be guarding.' As it is said. On the path of approaching there, iron-haired dogs chase, and a pit filled with burning embers and sharp-edged stones, when the knee is submerged, as soon as the foot is placed there, the skin and flesh and blood rot, and when lifted, one experiences the suffering of being reborn again. As it says in the 'Epistle to a Student': 'Dogs with masses of matted hair piled up, tear at the body with long fangs, the tips of vajras, the banks of a river without measure, filled with ashes and flames, chase one into unbearable stones with sharp, pointed edges.' So it is said. The putrid mud is, having fallen into a great outer mud pit, creatures with white bodies and black heads, with sharp beaks, pierce the skin, and the body is tormented greatly by suffering.

Even reaching the point of being unable to move, it is like being trapped with karma as the net and life as the bird. As mentioned before: Some tiny insects buzz, their bodies are gnawed by numerous insects, swollen and decaying. Those beings who are trapped by the nature of karma, even just moving is impossible, yet they still live. Thus it is said. The forest like swords is, being liberated from burning ashes, decaying corpses, and wide roads filled with razors, appearing in a lush green forest, as pointed out in the Commentary on the Friendly Epistle. There, running to seek refuge, the wind caused by karma shakes the trees, and all the leaves fall like a rain of weapons, the body trembles, and can only cry out, other than that, it is the situation of being separated from friends. As the Admonition to a Friend says: Day and night tormented by suffering, unbearable, the body saddened by loss (of friends), seeing the dense green trees, then goes there. The leaves there fall like hundreds of weapons, the body trembles, and there for a long time remains in smoke, losing friends. Thus it is said. The Immeasurable River is, as the Commentary on the Friendly Epistle says: In the saline land and tolerable hot springs, the place called the Immeasurable River, like a hellish abyss, surrounds the sword forest. And it points out that all the roads there are on razor ground, and from above there are also willow forests striking with swords, so from the perspective of the road it is razor ground, the essence is the Immeasurable River, which is a hot spring full of saline, a place to fall into the abyss of weapons. As the Admonition to a Friend says: In the sword of the willow forest filled with razors, running exhausted, the body is wounded, helpless. Filled with three-pointed spears, short spears, arrows, and sharp swords, falling into the pit with the mouth of Yama open. Thus it is said. The weapon ground just mentioned, and the ཤལ་མ་ལི་ tree to be discussed, are not included in the four remaining ones, the teacher Great Wisdom said: These four are said to be the remaining ones, namely burning ashes, decaying corpses, sword forest, and the Immeasurable River. Because of this saying, here one should combine the Admonition to a Friend and (other) teachings to analyze in detail. Another difference is, the ཤལ་མ་ལི་ tree is, the path of climbing remembering intimate vows, the body severely pierced by sharp thorns, burning and rough.
