Since the realm being described is very profound, even the two difficult commentaries cannot clearly explain it, so in other treatises, various kinds of citations are used for support. But here, it seems that the views of Master Jnanasri in the Indian commentaries are particularly emphasized, so it is distinguished accordingly. The Avici hell is where all four directions, above and below, are covered with burning flames. There, sentient beings are like dry grass being ignited and blown by the wind. They are attached to the flesh, tendons, bones, and feet, just like being attached to the wick of a lamp, or like iron and coal fire being indistinguishable, these are sentient beings. These cannot be distinguished as fire, only a cry of agony can be heard from within a single pile of fire, this is the ultimate of suffering. As it is said in the 'Admonition Letter': The harms of the outer and inner are shown as two, the outer harm is: sometimes sparks fly and scatter, a tumultuous sound roars upwards. When grease falls, a bad sound is called out, the tip crackles and blazes. And the inner harm is: in the hollow of the breast bone, the sound of ashes crackling is heard. It falls into the inside that cannot be moved by the fire of the eon. This is briefly stated. In the meaning of the detailed explanation, it is also divided into two types of harm, inner and outer, the first is: from the lungs to the dry veins, like setting fire to the heart, a mass of fire blazes. Flames blaze from the throat and mouth, continuously arising with smoke. From hunger, the intestines and entrails stretch out, frightening everyone. They can only utter a loud, unintelligible cry. And the outer harm is: those who wish to escape from great suffering, again and again, seeing an open door or a gap, they peer as if looking at something far away. When the door of karma is tightly closed, then hunger, despair, and other sufferings will also arise. It explains the harm of the dwelling, and similarly, to show the harm of great arrows, clubs, and burning liquids. After various burning arrows fall like rain, the hell guards strike with clubs, shedding tears. They pour molten iron, sparks, and a string of burning flames. Smoke billows upwards from the holes of the mouth, nose, and ears. Eyes

They are completely burned between the breaking of the brain and the marrow. The flames of the burning brain, a collection of purplish-black flames. That fire, like an angry one, on that body, spreads like dry firewood piled up and lit. Thus it is said. To summarize the meaning of these, beings are as if their lives hang on a steep cliff, and like the water of a ravine, they are turbulent. The fires of hell are exhausted there, and the heat is also exhausted there. How all actions are extremely unbearable, they appear and are completely transformed in that way. Beings helplessly act according to their own actions. If one in a hundred is liberated from the hells, the place of sin, in the endless billions of worlds, it is extremely difficult to obtain a human body. Thus, the suffering of the sentient beings in Avīci hell is essentially scorching, with many forms, and without interval or cessation, so it is called Avīci or uninterrupted. The size of their bodies is also described in the Nirvana Sutra: those who have committed the eight uninterrupted actions have bodies of eighty thousand yojanas, yet they do not obstruct each other. Also, in the Mahayana scriptures, it is said that the tongues of those who slander the Dharma are a hundred thousand yojanas long, and so on, and their sensations are vast. The length of their lives is also described in the Smṛtyupasthāna Sutra as one intermediate kalpa. In the Karma-vibhaṅga Sutra, it is said that at the gate of Avīci hell, there is an iron mountain, one hundred and sixty thousand yojanas high. When the sentient beings of hell have worn it away with their bodies, their lives will end, which is immeasurable. Thus it is said. Even if one is liberated from there, it is extremely difficult to obtain a human body, and even if one obtains it, one is often born with disabilities and so on, because it is the time when the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of great merit has ripened. In the section on hells, it is said: For those who are great in virtue, who have done great harm, who have killed their parents and teachers, they will certainly suffer uninterrupted torment for a kalpa. In the fierce fire, even the bones of the body will be completely burned. Because there is no time for happiness, it is therefore called Avīci. Thus, for those who are great in virtue, who abandon and slander the supreme Dharma, and who break their vows, they will be born in Avīci hell. Thus it is proclaimed. Thus, the heat of the fires of these eight great hells also differs, with each subsequent one being seven times hotter than the previous one, just like the difference between ordinary firewood, sandalwood, and the fire at the end of time.
