Beings are tormented by the succession of past and future generations. Thus, samsara is the nature of suffering, the cause and effect of suffering, and the manner of relying solely on the great aggregate of suffering. Whatever is encountered in the world is a fierce fire that destroys. Therefore, the noble ones see it as constantly suffering like a burning fire from the peak of existence downwards. Similarly, in the vast nomadic great monastery, the desolate wilderness, and the friendless place, being harassed by tigers, lions, bears, grizzlies, wild men, etc., with no way to escape; or being imprisoned in a tight prison by the king's punishment, bound by iron shackles, wooden yokes, and ropes, lying in impurity, with no place to stretch out or curl up. What is the feeling of suffering when a sharp razor is close to harming the eyes, heart, and skin? Moreover, sentient beings have no time to be liberated, and like the turning of a water bucket, they enter the deep abyss of samsara. They are tightly bound by the shackles of birth, old age, sickness, death, and the three great and eight sufferings. Each time they take rebirth in existence, they wander unbearably in the desolate wilderness of the intermediate state. The impurity of bad karma stains the body, and they cannot breathe freely in a place of happiness. The sharp arrows of base instincts and evil thoughts pierce the eye of wisdom, the heart of patience, and the skin of virtuous accumulations, so they must wander in the ocean of suffering of samsara without end, which are the equivalents of those temporary terrors. As it says in the Extensive Play Sutra: Children are attached to and delighted in this samsara, like pigs are attached to impure things. Here, sentient beings are submerged, like elephants are submerged in mud. Here, minds are attached, like dogs are attached to bones. Here, sentient beings fall, like moths fall into a flame. Here, sentient beings are caught, like fish are caught in a net. Here, sentient beings revolve, like a potter's wheel. Here, sentient beings are deceived, like a swindler deceives a child. Furthermore, because enemies and friends are uncertain, the cause and effect of benefit and harm are confused.

The aspect of suffering arising from actions. Do I have beneficial friends or incompatible relatives and enemies? All sentient beings are beyond comprehension. Because they take the side of enemies, friends, and neutrals, giving benefit and harm is beyond imagination. Therefore, what is widely known and very firm in the world is: "This is my beneficial friend, this is my enemy, this is my father, this is a relative on my father's side, relying on caste and lineage, this is my mother, this is a relative on my mother's side, possessing the nature of relatives and attendants, this is a neutral person." A neutral person is an object of abandonment, a beneficial friend is an object of benefit, an enemy is an object of punishment, sons and daughters are objects of attachment, and should not become a place for increasing attachment. In a previous life or in a future life, a father will become a son, a mother will become a wife, an enemy will become a beneficial friend, or it may even be reversed. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "A father is a son, a mother is a wife, beings who are enemies will also be friends, because it reverses, so there is nothing certain in samsara." And the noble Katyayana said: "A householder begged for food, he held the enemy who had become a small son in his lap, ate the father who had become a fish, the mother was born as a dog and beat the fish bones, seeing this, he said: 'Eating the father's flesh, beating the mother, carrying the enemy of bad karma in his lap, the wife gnawing on the husband's bones, the laws of samsara are laughable!'" Furthermore, the Blessed One also spoke about the suffering of repeatedly taking rebirth: "Monks, for example, if someone were to take a lump of earth the size of a mustard seed from this great earth, saying, 'This is my mother, this is my mother's mother.' Monks, the earth of this great earth would be used up first, but the mothers of people would not be used up. I say this." The meaning of what the teacher, the noble one, said about the end of mothers, etc., is like a verse. Generally speaking, due to the fault of constantly abandoning various different bodies, it is generally said: "The life of just one atom-like body, in order to transform into tangible and intangible lives, heads and limbs are cut and chopped off, piled up."
