Arising, karma causes happiness and suffering. Thus, upon the alaya-vijnana (store consciousness) which is neutral, the causes and effects of samsara, non-virtue, and the lesser virtue of meritorious deeds, as well as the cause of liberation, the liberation portion that is to be separated from suffering, and all the manifest realizations of the path of complete purification, all rely upon it. Moreover, although they do not exist from the beginning, it serves as the basis for accumulating those that arise suddenly. Therefore, in order to generate suffering and the lower realms, there are ten non-virtuous actions from the perspective of abandonment; in order to accumulate happiness and the higher realms, there are the paths of meritorious deeds that transform into ten virtuous actions from the perspective of acceptance. Among the ten paths of action that are spoken of, the first is an explanation of the three of the body: killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. First, killing is: without confusion of consciousness, intentionally taking the life of another. Similar actions include beating and other harmful acts. Stealing is knowingly stealing the property of others. Similar actions include obtaining through deception and trickery. Sexual misconduct is indulging in sexual acts for reward. Similar actions include engaging in sexual practices that should not be done. Among these, killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct, these three actions of the body, have direct indications, and each has its own similar action, that is, they are explained in pairs. First, the fault of directly indicating killing is completed with five branches: the basis is a sentient being, there is recognition of it, there is the thought of killing, the action is carried out, and death occurs at the time of carrying out the action or afterwards, these are the five branches. Similar actions refer to death caused by beating and other reasons, even though there is no obvious intention to kill. Second, stealing is completed with four branches: the object to be taken is owned by another, one knows this oneself, one knowingly intends to steal, and then one moves the object and obtains it oneself. Similar actions refer to obtaining through deception, such as trade and unreasonable punishments, etc., relying on means. Obtaining through trickery is like using inaccurate measures and scales. Sexual misconduct with desire has seven types: arising from oneself, arising from one's own wife, arising from one who should not be a wife being made a wife, and...

Arising from a male, arising from an animal, and arising from a boy and a girl. Among these, arising from oneself means: recalling places, women, etc., and ejaculating semen by oneself. Arising from one's own wife means: at an improper time, during the day, while observing vows, being sick, being pregnant, being afflicted by sorrow, having menstruation, or being unwell. Improper places are places such as parents, teachers, the Sangha, stupas, etc. Improper limbs are the mouth, excretory passage, navel, etc. In short, everything other than the female sexual organ. These three also apply to others. Arising from one who should not be a wife but is treated as a wife means: a celibate laywoman, a bhikshuni (since there are none in Tibet, there is no reason), a female novice, a female probationary novice, or a woman observing vows, whether she is happy or unhappy, causing the circumstance of abandoning vows. Arising from one who is not a wife means: one who is possessed by another household, one who is a relative within seven generations who has not passed away, one who has a Dharma banner, one who has vows, parents, brothers, sisters, lineage, those protected by the husband's entourage as mentioned, parents-in-law, brothers-in-law, i.e., those protected by the husband's side as mentioned, those protected by unequal caste and qualities, even if they become prostitutes, those protected by other men who have already paid the price, and those who are possessed like wives by others, engaging in sexual acts with any of them. Arising from a male means: another male engaging in sexual intercourse in the mouth, excretory passage, etc. Arising from an animal means: in the sexual organs and excretory passages, etc., of those animals. Arising from a boy and a girl means: forcing those who cannot endure sexual acts against their will, and engaging in sexual intercourse in their mouths, excretory passages, and sexual organs. These acts of sexual misconduct are completed by three branches: recognizing that place and time, etc., engaging in sexual acts, and experiencing the feeling that follows. These are as explained in the Sutra on the Ten Virtuous Paths of Action. If we follow the words of our own treatises, receiving payment means: being hired by others.
