A person whose actions are deficient but whose thoughts are complete exists. To see the immature as immature is characteristic of those whose thoughts and actions are both deficient. To see the mature as mature is characteristic of those whose thoughts and actions are both complete. Just as the cause is, so too is the nature of the result. In the sutras, it goes from appearance to the end of appearance. In the "Letter to a Friend," it says: From appearance to the end of appearance, from darkness to the end of darkness, from appearance to the end of darkness, from darkness to the end of appearance, there are four kinds of people, and the first of these is the best. Going from appearance to the end of appearance refers to being born among gods and powerful people and then being born again in the same place. Going from darkness to the end of darkness refers to being born among the unfortunate and powerless and then being born again in either of those two places. Going from appearance to the end of darkness refers to being born among gods and powerful people and then being born among the three lower realms and the powerless. Going from darkness to the end of appearance refers to being born from the three lower realms and so on into the world of the gods and among powerful people. Examples of the latter two are the miserly Joy and the frog-like son of a god. This is what is said in the commentary. Therefore, the results of good and evil from previous lives can be known by the obvious happiness and suffering of this life. Although the results of present actions may not be immediately visible, like an eagle soaring high in the sky whose shadow is temporarily invisible, yet it is inseparable from its form. When the conditions are right and the time is ripe, it becomes even more apparent. To illustrate, the shadow of a bird flying in the sky never separates from its body, but because the ground is high, it is temporarily invisible. However, as it approaches the ground, it suddenly appears beneath its chest. When the conditions are right and the time is ripe, there is nowhere to go. The sutra says: The actions of sentient beings will not be wasted even after hundreds of kalpas. When the conditions are right and the time is ripe, they will ripen into their own fruit. And the "Letter to a Friend" says: Whatever evil deeds are committed, although they do not cut like a sword immediately, when the time of death arrives, the results of those actions will become manifest.

So! Again, like this, non-meritorious deeds are like the fire of a horse-faced being, which can also dry up the waves of the heavenly ocean. The example and meaning of destroying the boat of omniscience are taught in the Hundred Deeds and the Great Play. As long as one has not ceased to grasp at things as real, even the smallest non-meritorious deed can produce great results. Just as the waves of the vast and deep ocean can be dried up by the fire in the mouth of a mare-headed vulture, so too can the root of heavenly bliss be cut off. Even after the mind is liberated from defilements, the ripening of karma does not let go until the aggregates are abandoned. Therefore, even the body, which is like a boat of omniscience, will be destroyed. For example, the Venerable Maudgalyāyana was killed by the wanderers, the Venerable Kubjakā was impoverished and died of starvation, and the bhikkhuni Utpalavarna was killed by Datta by striking her head with a fist. Even those who have attained the state of an arhat follow the consequences of their actions. As it is said in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: If non-virtue obstructs even rebirth in the heavens, what need is there to mention the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas? What need is there to mention that it obstructs the All-Knowing Buddha? This is just an example. Furthermore, the vast reasoning of karma and its results should be sought in the Mindfulness Sutra, the Hundred Deeds Sutra, and the Great Play Sutra, and so on. This is the conclusion with a reproach. For sentient beings in the lower realms who are extremely tolerant of suffering, the land of the powerful heroes of the ten virtues is not struck by the arrows of war, but all the broken vows are under your control. Some people's discipline, some people's lifespan and life, some people's asceticism, some people's Dharma and wealth, some people's shame, some people's sense of honor, etc., are abandoned for the sake of sin very often. There are two kinds of virtue: the merit-compatible and the liberation-compatible. The first is the ten virtuous deeds that only produce the happiness of samsara and will eventually be exhausted, the four dhyanas, and the four formless absorptions, which are unrelated to liberation. The second is the person who generates the mind to seek the path of the Hearers and practices from the first path of mindfulness to completion is a small person. One who enters the path of the Solitary Buddha is a medium person.
