Like being caught in a snare, like encountering a wild man face to face, like falling into the throat of a crocodile, like entering the island of a Rakshasi, when a deep sense of disillusionment with the ways of samsara arises from the depths of one's heart, one turns away from the mind of clinging to permanence. The partiality towards enemies and friends collapses. The rope of distraction is severed. Diligence arises naturally. Whatever one does becomes Dharma. The two accumulations increase. Unprecedented qualities are born. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas also always contemplate this. It is also the most supreme among qualities. In the Vinaya Sutra, it is said, "Better than giving umbrellas and food to a hundred monks is a single moment of contemplating the impermanence of conditioned things." In short, the cause of all worldly wealth, the discipline of vows, the qualities of learning, and the yoga of generation and completion stages being exhausted in the bardo is because impermanence has not arisen from the mindstream. Because there is no contentment with possessions, attachment does not turn into merit. Because it is not placed on the vow of renunciation, the Pratimoksha vows will degenerate from their qualities. Here, being deceived by attachment and aversion, hearing and thinking become the work of demons. Because of clinging to wandering villages and subduing ghosts, one is obscured from supreme accomplishment. Therefore, among all thoughts, the most supreme is the practice of impermanence, which should be ascertained as being like the reins and bridle for going on the path of higher realms and definite goodness. In the Treasury of Qualities, it is said: The Chapter on Impermanence, the commentary on the second chapter. The commentary on the third chapter. The third general meaning, the establishment of the aspect of cause and effect: Thus, those who have reached the other world, in what way are they bound by the rope of what status? Only good deeds and bad habits are closely taken, the conventional truth is without deception. Whoever reaches the state of the afterlife is not non-existent like holding wrong views, nor is it going to high or low status by chance, but the high or low of the afterlife follows the infallible law of cause and effect, as stated in the White Lotus of Compassion Sutra: "The world is made by karma, transformed by karma. Sentient beings are made by karma, born from the cause of karma, distinguished by karma." And as stated in the Jewel Garland Sutra: "From good deeds comes happiness,

Likewise, all happy migrations are the same. Suffering arises from non-virtue, and likewise, all bad migrations are the same. Thus it is said. In order to illustrate this with an example, just as various kinds of seeds are evident in the fields of farmers, this sentient being is made diverse by many kinds of actions that have been familiarized and accustomed to in other lifetimes. For example, crops and the like follow the seeds themselves, and if bitter and pungent seeds such as long pepper are planted, the fruits will only be bitter and pungent. If grapes or mangoes are planted, only sweet tastes will arise. Similarly, from non-virtuous actions come the fruits of suffering and bad migrations, and from virtuous actions come the fruits of happiness and higher realms. As it says in the Noble Certainty Sutra: "Spicy seeds will produce spicy fruits. Sweet seeds will produce sweet fruits." By this example, the ripening of sin is spicy, and the fruit of virtue is sweet, which the wise should understand. Do not commit the three sins, and even if others do, the wise should not rejoice in them. Always perform the three virtues with body, speech, and mind. Rejoice in those who practice virtue. This shows both the characteristic of how the fruit arises from the cause and what should be adopted and abandoned. Although this is so, sentient beings have been under the control of karma and afflictions since beginningless time. Because they follow them, differences in dwelling, kind, and happiness and suffering are formed. Because sentient beings have different inclinations, this makes the world diverse. In particular, the differences in the actions and thoughts of human beings are difficult to fathom, but the ripening of the fruit is unerring. As it says in the "Letter to a Friend": "People are like mangoes, unripe but seeming ripe, ripe but seeming unripe, unripe seeming unripe, and ripe seeming ripe, understand it to be like that." The first of these, the mango fruit is unripe inside but looks ripe outside, is a person whose mind is applied to practice and whose practice is perfect. Seeming ripe but actually unripe, ripe inside but the essence of the outside is still green, is...
