It is unreasonable grief to torment body, speech, and mind with only accumulation, like a bee. In the words on impermanence, it is said: For those who have entered the path of karma, who is without increase, who has passed away without fault, what is there to grieve for? Why should he die? If it is not someone else, then this is a great misfortune, and it is appropriate to utter a great cry. Like this, for all beings who are born, death is waiting in front, and since everything is changing, it is not appropriate to grieve. Thus it is said. Therefore, when seeing the appearance of others going to the next world, one should not remain in vain sorrow, but should practice the Dharma of death oneself. Even the Bodhisattvas of the three grounds are said to meditate on impermanence, so it is not enough for ordinary people to just hear the words of impermanence. Even for the corpse of Sakuci who has died, one should pay great attention and think: This is because there is birth, there is death. I have already been born, what choice is there other than death? When death comes, nothing other than the sacred Dharma can help, and one should always have a clear understanding of this. Once such an unfeigned impermanence arises in the mind, one will not care about the happiness and fame of this life. As it is said in the Mindfulness Sutra: Among all the meditations, meditating on impermanence alone is the best. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in order to show the slowness and speed of the passing of life, there is this example: A fine thread made by the effort of a person is fast. Faster than that is a hungry ghost moving on the ground. Faster than that is one moving in the sky. Faster than that are the sun and moon. Faster than that are the gods. The fastest of all is the passing of human life. Like four powerful men standing back to back, each shooting an arrow in front of them, that is the ultimate speed. But someone who can catch the arrows in the air at the same time before they touch the ground is faster than that is a hungry ghost moving on the ground. Faster than that is a hungry ghost moving in the sky. Faster than that is the wind chariot of the sun and moon. Faster than that are the extremely fast gods. Faster than all of that is the passing of human life, therefore, without exception, all sentient beings have fallen into the mouth of the Lord of Death. As it is said in the Jataka tales: Like a great ship in the mouth of a crocodile in the ocean.

Although I don't want to run, ignorant beings like me are driven by karma, and the Lord of Death approaches quickly. The merciless Lord of Death, the demon, also devours other beings in the same way. Thus it is said. Shantideva said: Life is a momentary deception, the body is like a fleeting bubble. Although we understand the length of time, some have lost two-thirds of their lives, some have passed the halfway point, and some have only a little left. We should think deeply about this and meditate on impermanence towards enemies, friends, and biases. Do not speak ill of each other, do not fight, do not say bad things. Even if we walk together for a short distance, we will soon separate. Some die, some leave, some stay, and some separate. Those who die, some go to the heavens, and some go to the lower realms. Those who are alive will either die first or die later. Friends and relatives cannot stay long either, and even if there are those we dislike, they will quickly separate. We ourselves will also disappear and will not meet again in the future. Even if we meet, we will not remain in the same concept of enemies and friends. Similarly, not to mention accumulated wealth, even the commonly used rosary and water cup will abandon us. Thinking about the reason why we abandon them, whatever is given to others is our own. Whatever we possess is someone else's. Focusing on this, do good deeds when we have autonomy, because all thoughts and actions depend on ourselves, so we must follow closely. After death, even if others dedicate merit or act according to a will, there will only be a little benefit. On the other hand, others dividing our property may also become a great source of sin. Life is fleeting, wealth is decaying, youth is impermanent, and friends and relatives are parting. We should generate a sense of renunciation towards these untrustworthy things. In particular, the four great illusion wheels that reveal the destruction of samsara are: when one is in full bloom, one is afflicted by the punishment of aging; when one gathers and dwells in peace, one is disturbed by disease; perfect dependent arising is destroyed by decline; and death comes quickly to attack life. Thus it is taught. These four things that make the world unpleasant, although they accompany all beings, due to the other power of ignorance, we do not contemplate the method of liberation from these harms—the supreme Dharma.
