Having abandoned all eating and drinking, preparing to go elsewhere, lying on the final bed, sinking into the cycle of beginningless birth, aging, and death, only a single breath remains, the Lord of Death causes fear and dread, falling into the clutches of demons, the breath ceases, the mouth and nose are contorted, the teeth are clenched, praying and saying, "Give alms, give alms," entering from the existence of karma into existence, alone and without companion, abandoning this world, going to another world, lifting the great corpse, entering the great darkness, falling into the great precipice, entering the dense thicket, going to the great solitude, being carried away by the great ocean, being blown by the wind of karma, going to a direction without footing, entering the great battlefield, being seized by the great demons, clinging to the sky, being surrounded by father, mother, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters, the breath ceases, saying to divide the wealth, saying, "Alas, father, alas, mother, alas, son," the hair is disheveled, when only almsgiving, asceticism, and Dharma become friends, then there is no other refuge than the Dharma, no other protector, no other support. Great King, at that time, at that moment, the Dharma will become an island, a dwelling, a protector, and a teacher. Great King, at such a time, while lying on one's bed, experiencing the visions of the afterlife, falling into the lower realms, then a vision of fear of the situation will arise, and at that time, nothing other than the Dharma can become a refuge. Great King, your body, so well protected and so well nurtured, will also eventually face death. Great King, even if your body is washed and anointed like this, and fumigated with incense, and adorned with fragrant flowers, it will eventually become unclean and emit an unpleasant odor. Great King, even if you are covered with fine clothes such as Kashi silk and silk, when lying on the final bed, you will face death wearing dirty clothes, and depart alone and naked. Great King, delighting in various kinds of desirable qualities

Even if you do that, you will abandon everything and die unsatisfied. Great King! For example, in your own home, you have incense, flowers, silk bedspreads, cushions, and all kinds of clothes, and you sleep on a bed with pillows on the left and right, but in the end you will be abandoned in a large cemetery full of crows, foxes, and disgusting corpses, lying motionless on the ground, and you will surely be eaten by ghosts. Great King! For example, you ride on elephants and horses, etc., and are happy with the beautiful and pleasant music, raising flags and umbrellas, etc., and the king, ministers, and friends praise you with sweet words, and you walk in front, but soon after, you will die in bed, carried by four people, and your parents and siblings, etc., will raise their hands, beat their chests, and be overwhelmed with grief, and you will be carried out of the south gate of the city and buried underground in a wilderness temple, or eaten by vultures, crows, and foxes, etc., and those bones will be burned, or thrown into the water, or buried underground. The wind, sun, and rain will turn them into powder, scattering in all directions and rotting away. Great King! Thus, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, thus, everything is unstable. As it is said, in general, conditioned phenomena are impermanent, especially human life is impermanent, especially the basis of the union of body and mind is impermanent. The villages, towns, and monasteries that were once prosperous and flourishing are now empty and desolate, as an example, one's own body is like a village and town, and the mind is their master, and both the basis and the dependent do not exist anymore, one should think well about this nature. My dwelling and roof, etc., will eventually become a foundation where even the nests of birds and sparrows cannot be built, and before long, a sudden death will make me abandon the sight of this world, embark on the path of the afterlife, lie at the end of the bed, enjoy the last food, and not know who will say the last words. One should be saddened by the moment of leaving alone from the encirclement of retinue, wealth, and relatives and friends, as the teacher Ashvaghosa said: Death is unavoidable.
