By what action? When all means are absent, without generating joy and prolonging it, how will one proceed like a fish in water? On earth or in the heavens, some who are born and have not died, some you have not seen, heard, or doubted? Thus it is said. Fourth, contemplating various examples and meanings, in order to reveal the latent impermanence. Those beings tormented by the heat of Soga, delight in the clear light of the autumn moon, and as their lives pass by a hundred days, they do not fear in their hearts the place where they are going. Thus it is said. Thus, most beings do not investigate and are accustomed to recklessness, so they naturally encounter death in a state of not thinking about life and death. In the Collection of Birth Stories, it is said: The person who first enters the womb, that one will inevitably decline without increase, and there is no turning back from what has passed. In the morning, many people are seen, but in the evening some will not be seen. Thus it is said. If, by the coincidence of various circumstances, one ultimately becomes certain of the nature of death, even then, from the moment of birth, there is no addition whatsoever to the amount of life that is propelled by the force of karma. The causes of sudden diminution are very numerous, because one delights in and engages in many things that are contrary to longevity, such as taking life, which are non-virtuous. Even that amount of life passes away without a foothold, like a kite flying on the road, or like a torrent of water from a steep cliff, in a state where consciousness is obscured for a moment, an instant, or a short while. Those who are slightly distressed by the heat of the sun in the Soga season, and who yearn for and long for the cool and temperate season of autumn, are unaware that they have shortened their own lives by a hundred days during that time. In the words on impermanence, it is said: The autumn season, symbolized by the cool month of Soga, is coming, and all beings who rejoice in this do not think that my life will be exhausted. Thus it is said. Similarly, one mourns the death of others, but does not think at all about the Lord of Death standing before oneself, so one wages war, seizes new territories, renovates houses, and builds castles with vast and permanent dwellings.
