Thus it is said. Furthermore, by taking refuge in the Three Jewels, the karmic obscurations and sins accumulated in the past will be partially thinned and partially exhausted. As stated in the Sutra of the Essence of the Sun: "Whoever among sentient beings goes for refuge to the Buddha, even if demons were to slay them by the millions, they would not be able to. Even if their discipline is ruined and their minds are confused, they will surely cross to the other shore of existence." Also, liberation from harm and near harm is mentioned in the Noble Sutra of the Victory Banner: "Monks, whether you dwell in monasteries, charnel grounds, or empty wildernesses, if you take refuge in the Three Jewels, fear, suffering, and that which makes the hair stand on end will disappear." It is also said that for these reasons, there is a tale that the ignorant believe: Once, a thief was struck three times by a jailer with a whip, and each time the jailer struck him, he signaled and shouted, "I take refuge in the Buddha! I take refuge in the Dharma! I take refuge in the Sangha!" The thief was so overwhelmed by the pain that he hid under a bridge. As he mentally cultivated the words of refuge as being one with the pain, he saw many non-humans coming noisily from the other side of the bridge, saying, "Here is someone taking refuge in the Three Jewels!" and they fled. Thus, even for those whose minds are completely disturbed by afflictions, the inconceivable results of the Three Jewels are not deceiving. How much more so for those who are entangled by afflictions and bonds, who view cyclic existence as a destructible collection, who have strayed onto the path of the lesser vehicle that is fixated on peace, and who are tormented by all unfavorable conditions such as cyclic existence and the lower realms—from all of these, they are protected in this very life, and all purposes of higher status and definite goodness are easily accomplished. Who would not rely on this one who possesses great power? As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Always from all the collections of afflictions, all misdeeds and all faults, and also from the fears of old age and death, the Buddha himself fully protects. From all harms, the lower realms, and improper places, the destructible collection, the lesser vehicle, he protects them."

Indeed, it is the supreme object of refuge. Thus it is. The cause of being born in the lower realms is purified, and in the Compendium of Trainings it is said: "Here, take the story of the enlightenment of the pig as an example." The meaning of what is said is that the son of the gods who was going to be born as a pig, because he took refuge, was not born as a pig, as mentioned earlier. Not being separated from the Three Jewels is obtained from remembering them. In the Collection of Mindfulness, it says: "Whoever remembers the Buddha day and night, and whoever has gone for refuge to the Buddha, is the treasure of men." Thus, the other two are also applicable. As stated in the Moon Lamp Sutra and the Noble Jewel Stack Sutra, remembering the three is clearly explained in words. Relying on such a threefold refuge, I have obtained, indeed it is well obtained, one should cultivate joy in this way, and afterwards, if combined with dedication, sins will be exhausted and virtues will increase, so that in all lifetimes one will obtain not being separated from the Three Jewels. Perfect excellence comes in this very life, and any world where the qualities of the Three Jewels have not been proclaimed is a great blind spot abandoned by the guide. Here, relying on the immeasurable refuge, for those who follow the noble qualities, all the perfections of existence and peace appear in this very life. As the Jewel Stack Sutra says: "The wise follow virtue, and by this also accomplish the meaning of perfection." Therefore, whatever Dharma-abiding activity one undertakes, one should first revere and take refuge in the Three Jewels, and pray for the wish to be fulfilled, and it will be easily accomplished. Thus, temporarily, the accumulation of merit is completed by the refuge of the cause, and ultimately the two forms of the form body are accomplished. As the Jewel Stack Sutra says: "Whoever goes for refuge to the Three Jewels, he also completes the accumulation, and also attains Buddhahood, and obtains the Dharma and the Sangha." Thus it is. In order to ascertain the true refuge, the unfailing refuge of the fruit is: the three doors of liberation, the realm without aspiration, the reality vajra, the unconditioned. Obtain the complete accumulation of wisdom, possessing two purities. On the other shore
