Bound am I. From now until the essence of enlightenment. For the sake of all sentient beings. Supreme Lama and perfect Buddha. Outer and inner vehicles of Dharma and Sangha. To all worthy of refuge. Not just with desire and ignorance. Likewise, not for the sake of pride. Not for the sake of petty gains. With the noose of wisdom, love, and power. Like embracing these beings. The qualities of the Three Jewels. With true mindfulness, I take refuge. Thus, and so forth, from the depths of my heart, taking refuge three times to conclude. This is either a ritual or obtained from symbolism, that is, when repaying kindness, at the time of receiving the three refuges, kneeling with palms joined, verbally reciting the words of taking refuge in the Three Jewels. This is the ritual of body and speech shown. Thus it is said. Not relying on ritual is taking refuge in the Three Jewels with one-pointed mind. In that very scripture it says: If one is focused with one-pointed mind, even if there is body and speech, there is no ritual shown, this is called not showing ritual. Thus it is said. In any case, abiding in the state of wisdom without any object of focus is the ultimate refuge. It is the cause of unerring, transcendent refuge attained by the nature of reality. To explain the benefits of the refuge of cause. Like the sky is immeasurable. Relying on the Three Jewels, the black and white karmic results. The limits are immeasurable, when refuge takes shape. It cannot be supported by the vessel of the sky. Entering the ranks of Buddhists, relying on all vows. Abandoning the accumulation of sins and harms. Protecting from the precipice of bad destinies, not separating from the Three Jewels. Perfectly endowed, coming to the Dharma of seeing. Completing the accumulation of merit, accomplishing the two form bodies. Thus, like the nature of the sky, it cannot be measured by up and down and directions. In general, relying on the black and white karmic results of the Three Jewels is inconceivable, repeatedly stated both directly and indirectly, as it is also said in the Sutra Pitaka: Like the sky has no end. Like it cannot be measured by spans. Likewise, relying on the Three Jewels. The limits of merit and sin are immeasurable. Thus it is proclaimed, especially for those who have taken refuge.

The benefits of taking refuge: In the Sutra of Immaculate Purity, it says, "The merit of taking refuge, if it had a form, would fill the entire realm of space, and it would be even greater than that." Also, in the Compendium of Perfections, it says, "If the merit of taking refuge had a form, this triple world would be a small container. The great ocean, a treasure of water, cannot be measured by a handful." Furthermore, in the Sutra Requested by the Boy Jewel-Giver, it also says, "All those who take refuge in the Buddha, all their virtuous qualities will manifestly increase. They will have shame, they will have embarrassment. All those who take refuge in the Dharma are conscientious, their collections of qualities are vast, they constantly remember their past lives, and they possess a share of the Dharma. All those who take refuge in the Sangha, their minds are workable, the doors of samadhi and dharani are numerous, they are always of noble lineage, and even in dreams they are inseparable from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Furthermore, they are protected by the gods who delight in white, and the roots of virtue also increase." And so on. Therefore, to be included in the category of Buddhists: Generally, the ways of establishing inner and outer are not absolutely fixed, but some Indian saints such as Shantideva are said to distinguish by means of taking refuge. First, one enters the category of Buddhists, and from the moment of obtaining refuge, one sincerely regards the Three Jewels as refuges such as the teacher, and one must not abandon the refuge that has been obtained. If one does not have refuge, even if one performs corresponding virtuous deeds, one will not be included as a Buddhist. To become the basis of all vows: In the Seventy Verses on Refuge, it says, "All vows exist, but those who have not taken refuge do not have them." Because refuge is established as the basis of qualities, those who enter a philosophical system must have a refuge that can serve as the basis of vows. As mentioned earlier, "Taking refuge in the three virtuous ones is the root of the eight precepts." This refers to making the thought of nirvana firm through refuge, and from that, vows arise. In the Commentary on the Treasury, it also says, "Those who take refuge are the door to receiving all true vows."
