Because of attaining the irreversible state, whoever relies on him for refuge is like a vine depending on a tree; because he is skilled in methods of taming those to be tamed, whoever relies on him for refuge will accomplish their purpose; because his compassion has no partiality, and he is pleased only by offerings of faith and practice, he does not pursue worldly pleasures. Therefore, the Dharma he teaches, and the Sangha who enter his teachings and study the noble path, are also worthy of refuge. How does one take refuge? Ordinary people fear the suffering of the lower realms and desire the qualities of gods and humans, etc. Hearers and self-realizers, in addition to that, fear the nature of existence, the wheel of birth, aging, sickness, and death, and thus generate the three faiths. Mahayana practitioners, because their minds are controlled by great compassion, abandon their own benefit and, in order to save all beings from samsara. Therefore, differing from the first two, they aim solely at benefiting others, and with the mind of a great being, they generate firm conviction in the qualities of the Three Jewels, and with a single-minded attitude, they vow to take refuge from the depths of their hearts. Regarding this, temporarily, in terms of the common object, it is the Buddha; if in terms of a special object, in the Vajramala it says: "The stainless mind is the Buddha, the Dharma is the true speech, the Sangha is called the body, it is the place of the Bodhisattva assembly." Therefore, the nature of the union of the Three Jewels, the Lama himself is the main one, surrounded by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas like dense clouds, coming from nowhere, going nowhere, not a permanent thing, with the nature of faith and aspiration, appearing in front like a bubble born from water, offering vast offerings of real and imagined things, led by prostrations, confession of sins, and respectful offerings, oneself and all beings join palms with the same aspiration, with the sound of definite renunciation, visualizing taking refuge: From me are formed the aggregates, from form is formed the name, in the bottomless and boundless samsara, by the rope of suffering.
