Just as the Difficult-to-Conquer Black (referring to a non-Buddhist teacher) awakened upon seeing the volumes of the Tripitaka, regretted his lack of merit, realized that his own views and tenets were wrong, and thus entered the Buddhist path, becoming the crown jewel of all logicians—the teacher Hero. Therefore, in this present time, there is nothing that nourishes faith more than reading the Sutras. Merely reading the Jataka tales of the Buddha and the Mahayana scriptures such as the Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutra, will undoubtedly generate faith that makes one's hair stand on end. Among these, the faith of delight is: seeing that the characteristics of the Dharma and the ethics, wisdom, and roots of virtue of the noble beings are not in vain, and thus feeling delight and rejoicing in them, accompanied by joyful attachment. The faith of aspiration is: recognizing the nature of suffering, being afraid of the cycle of birth and death, and knowing that liberation from samsara depends on the supreme Dharma—the truth of cessation and the path, and the teacher who expounds it, just like a bee longing for a flower. The faith of conviction is: from the depths of one's heart, being certain of the qualities of the Three Jewels, and believing that the Three Jewels will not deceive oneself, whether one is an ordinary being or a noble one, even the happiness of feeling tranquility is known to be the blessing of the Three Jewels, and the feeling of subtle suffering is known to be the manifestation of one's own karma, without any doubt whatsoever. The irreversible faith is: in general, for the activities of hearing, thinking, and meditating, and especially for the occasion of taking refuge, no matter what unfavorable circumstances arise, such as illness, harm, suffering, enemies, or any major changes occur, this faith will not regress, just like salt dissolving into water. For example, in India, a Buddhist layperson was captured by a non-Buddhist, who threatened, 'Give up your own god and views, join my sect, and if you don't, I will kill you.' The layperson replied, 'I can agree to your request in words, but I will not give up in my heart.' So, the non-Buddhist killed him. Therefore, the first two are the faith of beginners, which will surely be taken away by circumstances, and the latter two are the correct goals to be aspired to.

Furthermore, there are four causes for generating faith: relying on holy beings, associating with virtuous friends, recollecting the Three Jewels, and contemplating the faults of samsara, which is devoid of essence. Once you rely on a holy being who possesses qualities, since his nature abides on the path of relying on others, you are in accordance with him. Moreover, whatever methods he uses to introduce you to the path, he practices those actions, so you hear much about all his activities and practices, which become a cause for increasing faith. Therefore, in the Bodhisattva Pitaka, it says: "One who is said to have faith has great faith in the higher realms, relies on virtuous friends, desires to behold the noble ones, desires to hear the sacred Dharma, believes in karma and its results, and knows that Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Shravakas are virtuous friends, and relies on them with faith and pleases them." Similarly, if you associate with a faithful person as a friend, his behavior will naturally influence you. Just as Jivaka Kumara proclaimed the qualities of the teacher to King Bimbisara, causing him to develop faith, because an impartial mind is the source of benefit, and speech is of a truthful nature. As it is said in the Sutra of Ten Dharmas: "Whoever guides to liberation, faith is the supreme vehicle; therefore, a wise person should show how to follow faith." It is said. Recalling the Three Jewels increases faith because they have immeasurable qualities, which will be explained later. In the Moon Essence Sutra, it also says: "The recollection of unwavering faith in the Three Jewels is like a wish-fulfilling jewel." However, for ordinary beings, there is one great factor that contradicts faith. What is it? It is the failure to remember that life will soon come to an end and that the body will decay in the cemetery. These people are bound by the ropes of karma. As it is said: "Beings bound by the ropes of karma, like birds, even though they have wings, do not have the ability to practice contemplating death." It is said. Conversely, if one develops an unbearable fear of the general and specific faults of samsara, and especially of the suffering of the lower realms, and
