Since one cannot attain higher achievements without generating qualities, it is said in the Nirvana Sutra: 'Like the steps of a ladder, my profound teachings should also be studied gradually and diligently. Do not skip steps, but proceed systematically.' Thus it is said. Moreover, even though the Buddha himself has accomplished all the external supports or causes for saving oneself, children suffer because they lack the inner strength to rely on and take refuge in them with complete devotion. In the 'Praise of the Praiseworthy,' it says: 'All the powers of external support, you have truly accomplished, but because the inner strength is incomplete, children rely on suffering.' Thus it is said. To illustrate that meaning, for the path to liberation and qualities, as a basis and vessel, an infallible vow, refuge itself, before that, it is essential to know the qualities of the teacher and the teachings. Thus it is taught. Thus, the teacher, endowed with great compassion, for the path to liberation, the three trainings, and as a basis and vessel for all the qualities of abandonment and realization, without anything lacking, first accomplishes the infallible vow to be a worthy object of refuge. From one's own side, the main aspect of the cause for taking refuge wholeheartedly in that inner support is the teacher, and it is essential to first know the qualities of the teachings. Having understood this, the way to guide the mind, starting from the initial faith. The root of all dharmas is faith, without indicating scriptures in the mind of a person, seeing the teacher and reading the scriptures, it arises like shoots after rain. Among them, the initial faith is the first, similarly, desire and conviction do not turn back. Among the four forms, in this state of refuge, even if faced with life-threatening danger, one must not turn back. For this, the root of all happiness and well-being is faith, in the Ratnakuta Sutra it says: 'Faith is generated like a mother who goes first, it protects and increases all qualities, eliminates doubts and liberates from rivers, faith symbolizes a city of happiness. Faith is without turbidity, it makes the mind clear, it abandons pride, it is the root of respect, faith is the best of wealth, treasures, and feet, like a hand it is the root of accumulating merit.' Thus it is said, qualities

Therefore, everything must be generated based on faith. The arising of faith simultaneously precedes all white dharmas and is also the first of the seven noble riches. As much as faith increases, so much does the accumulation of goodness and merit increase. When it diminishes, all pure aspects also diminish like the moon encountering Rahu. Generally, noble lineages and those with good fortune tend to have innate faith. As stated in the "Ratnavali": "Only the faithful rely on the Dharma. The wise also understand the true meaning. Of these two, wisdom is superior, but faith is the precursor to wisdom." Although this is so, as stated in the "Sagararaja-pariprccha Sutra": "A person with faith is rare, surpassing others." Just like that, due to the causes and conditions of dependent origination, some lineages have not yet awakened, and especially ordinary common people, like the disappearance of appearances in sleep, the approximation of faith also mostly remains in an unpredicted state. Therefore, methods and means are most important for awakening them. Like this, seeing our teacher who does not contradict one's own views, or his representative, as well as seeing the images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, hearing their qualities, reading the scriptures, and so on, nourish faith. For example, the elephant of Ajatashatru, led by Nanda, calmed his angry and violent mind the moment he saw the Blessed One. Also, when merchants from the land of Gandhara went to a city that had been destroyed and looted, the Brahmins thought that these people were Buddhist lay practitioners and laughed at them, saying, "You who do not understand the qualities of the Great Lord are extremely foolish!" And they refuted them for praising the sect that preached harm as doctrine. Those merchants said, "Whose actions are superior, whose deeds are rare, but the non-superior are arrogant, alas! The world is truly rare!" Thus they rebuked them. Then they said, "Great Brahmin, please look, if the powerful harmer also becomes an object of offering, then bears, leopards, tigers, etc., should also be constantly offered." And so on, with this they refuted the Brahmin sect, proclaimed the qualities of the Tathagata, and therefore, these people generated great faith in the Buddha, and the Brahmins...
