Those who like to send land or impure places, kings of sinful deeds, those with wrong views, those who torment sentient beings and create conflict in the Sangha to the side of the monastery are signs of not accumulating merit. Conversely, those who are not disturbed by karma, afflictions, and sinful thoughts, have few internal and external obstacles, and even when doing good, possess discriminating wisdom and can employ their intelligence are signs of accumulating merit. As it is said in the scriptures: Without cultivation, reason declines; with the growth of pride, wealth declines; with extreme hatred, virtuous deeds decline; with attachment, true nobility declines. Therefore, intelligence that is not disturbed by karma, afflictions, and sins, can be employed by the power of wisdom and fortune, and is said in the Ornament Sutra to be a sign of accumulating merit. This is connected with the source of the scriptures. Therefore, having merit as a common cause is also a special quality of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, let alone those who seek distinguished and meaningful states? For example, in the Jataka tales, the king named "Power of Light" had five sons named Strength of Appearance, Diligence, Craftsmanship, Wisdom, and Merit, each named after their respective qualities, and all five upheld and praised their respective virtues. At that time, the youngest, Strength of Merit, said: "Without wisdom, appearance, craftsmanship, and diligence are of no benefit, and although wisdom is completely beneficial, wisdom cannot be obtained without merit, therefore merit is beneficial." And it says: "With merit, one obtains beauty; with merit, one is endowed with morality; with merit, one obtains glory; likewise, one becomes wealthy. With merit, one obtains wisdom; with merit, one obtains a tamed mind; with merit, one obtains good rebirths." And so on, although it is said that all the goodness of samsara and nirvana is the power of merit, the companions all uphold their respective aspects and do not acknowledge it as such. Then they each

In order to conceal his own merits, he did not reveal the appearance of a king and went to other places. A young and handsome man, because he was pleasing to see, lived only on the offerings of the people he gathered. A diligent person, like a swift river carrying sandalwood that others cannot take, lived only on the offerings that came from the great power of diligence. A skilled person lived only on the wages he received from it. A wise person lived only on the gains he made by skillfully reconciling two quarreling merchants. The power of merit: when he entered the house of a poor man, due to the power of his merit, much wealth, grain, gold, and silver appeared in that house. The poor man thought, 'This stranger who I didn't know before has come to my house, it must be due to his good fortune.' So he looked at the young man with respect and gave him great hospitality. When these reputations spread everywhere, for a time, the king of that country had no son and was about to be cut off from his lineage. The queen, ministers, and city leaders gathered and discussed, 'Who should be enthroned as king, who has the greatest merit?' They immediately recognized him and enthroned him as king. His merit and actions manifested together, so that the territory also touched the state of happiness. His own father, the king, also heard about this and gave the power of the kingdom to the young man, the power of merit. Therefore, in the world, there is nothing more beneficial than merit, so one should rely on special places and strive to accumulate merit, in order to reap the rewards in this life. What is that? One hundred years after the Buddha passed into Nirvana, in the city of Pataliputra, there appeared a king named Ashoka, who ruled over a quarter of the Chakravartin's territory. At first, he liked non-virtuous deeds, but later he became very respectful of virtuous deeds. For the sake of wealth, he sent five hundred merchants to the sea to collect jewels. They also went to the sea and brought back jewels, gold, silver, diamonds, and
