Becoming a direct antidote to afflictions, without clinging to any side, and to practice these meanings, generating the perseverance to endure difficulties, one should work tirelessly throughout the four seasons. Regarding these four times, the Sutra itself has clearly pointed out that one should not boast of false or narrow realizations. As stated in the *Inconceivable Appearance of a Boy Sutra*: "The boundary of the past is secluded, the boundary of the future is immutable, what arises in the present is fearful, and the equality of the three times—these are the four." Therefore, when the meaning of the equality of the three times is realized, it encompasses profound emptiness. All appearances arise as Dharma and the Guru, becoming the cause for attaining omniscience, which is called "Accomplishment of Good Wishes." Now, to explain the fourth turning of the wheel—the aspiration for the refuge of merit: The joy of the seven qualities of higher realms, Auspiciously endowed with leisure, noble, and without illness, The five of meditative stabilization and discriminating wisdom, Are signs of past reverence for merit. Thus, all causes for temporary eminence and ultimate, definitive accomplishment depend solely on merit. Those who have accumulated vast and uninterrupted merit in the past will, in this existence, obtain a particularly auspicious leisure endowed with the seven qualities of higher realms: good lineage, form, wealth, power, wisdom, longevity, health, and happiness. As Vasubandhu said: By desiring various qualities, if one does not diligently plant the seed, it is impossible for a sprout to arise. A single fault destroys many qualities. Longevity, likewise health, as well as form, good fortune, lineage, Wealth, and wisdom—these are the seven. The joy arising from that (merit), meditative stabilization, discriminating wisdom, and the two that belong to the higher (qualities)—having these five is said to be a sign of accumulating merit in the past. As stated in the *Ornament of the Sutras*: Joy and birth in a state of leisure, as well as health and meditative stabilization, the cause of discrimination for discernment, are the accumulation of merit in past lives.

In short, all the past good deeds, both increasing and decreasing them, are the doers of merit and non-merit, and there is no other. Therefore, King Spyi bo skyes offered seven grains of barley to the Tathagata Rnam par gzigs, and with this merit he became a Chakravartin king. He overcame the armies of the Four Great Kings and gained the power to share the throne with Indra in the Trayastrimsa heaven. However, the wisdom disturbed by sins in the world will make the pure fruit small, which is the law of nature. As soon as the mind of contending with Indra arose, he fell from that position like a falling star, and could not be reversed. As the Pag Sam Jon Shing says: 'Unfamiliarity destroys wisdom. Increasing pride destroys wealth. Intense hatred destroys goodness. Attachment destroys true sublimity.' Therefore, those who have not accumulated merit before will go to the place of no leisure. Even if they obtain a human body, their consciousness is like twilight towards the Dharma, but for non-Dharma matters, all kinds of subtle growth will gather, thus destroying wisdom. Some people have a little faith, but obstacles such as diseases and harms will arise, and they will be deceived by relatives, acquaintances, evil friends, and evil knowledge, thus investing in the desires of this life. In short, extreme attachment to wealth and enjoyment, mainly engaging in actions contrary to the Dharma, and having no remorse for this, will destroy true sublimity. Jealousy and intense competition, and arrogance of Rigidity, pride arising from lineage, appearance, and power, will destroy wealth. Good thoughts cannot abide, having malice towards all beings, and even harming birds and wild animals, is the root cause of the decline of merit, which will destroy all good deeds. In short, even if one has practiced hearing, thinking, and meditation, it has become an accomplice of afflictions; even if one has accumulated some resources, it mainly relies on fame, or only aims at dispelling obstacles, or only aims at peace and the happiness of gods and humans, or is mixed with sinful deeds.
