Being able to endure hunger, thirst, and afflictions, not worshiping Brahmins and other deities, being diligent and acting according to the Dharma, and having faith in the Three Jewels are beneficial friends. As it is said, having a good appearance means being free from illness. If these qualities are not fully present, then having half, a quarter, or even an eighth of them is necessary. The benefits of associating with such a person are immeasurable, because based on their conduct, all my own virtuous qualities will increase, and I will turn away from wrong paths. By explaining what to accept and reject, they become beneficial friends for relying on a guru. Even things not understood in discussions can arise from this. In particular, practicing pure conduct together depends on friends, as has been said before. As it says in the Vinaya Sutra: 'Practicing pure conduct together is a supreme friend, because it perfects pure conduct and increases the roots of virtue. Since it accords with the cause of liberation, those with fortune should rely on them with respect, reverence, and fear.' Similarly, mindfulness and awareness, which are central to both Sutra and Tantra paths, can be perfected through humility and reverence towards virtuous friends. The Sutra says: 'By relying on virtuous friends, mindfulness and awareness are purified, and the roots of virtue are perfected.' Generally, the supreme objects of veneration—gurus, khenpos, acharyas, as well as those who teach the Dharma, bodhisattvas who are in their last existence, shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, noble beings, parents, and the sick—all these have great power in both meritorious and non-meritorious actions. Therefore, the results mature in this very life without having to go through another lifetime, as stated in the Sutras. Especially now, in this degenerate age, when conceptual thoughts are coarse, unlike the past when conceptual thoughts were less prevalent during the Golden Age, where the results of good and bad deeds matured slowly in future lives, it is now more common for them to mature in this life. Therefore, by relying on a guru and through the benefits of serving them with respect, even someone who is ignorant like a foolish cowherd, lacking wealth, and despised by everyone, can, simply by relying on a virtuous spiritual friend and entering the path of Dharma...

Even showing respect and reverence to the (Guru) makes it easier to obtain even things like food and drink. In particular, it is said in the Bodhisattva Pitaka that if one acts according to the Guru's instructions, one will also obtain the four dharmas that make one noble, one will also obtain the many four dharmas, one will also obtain the four dharmas that cannot be destroyed by others, one will also obtain the four invisible dharmas, and one will also obtain the five immeasurable dharmas. Furthermore, just as medicinal herbs rely on the snowy mountains, all roots of virtue will also increase. Just as the great ocean becomes a vessel for water, it will also become a vessel for all qualities and dharmas. Just as the great ocean becomes a source of precious jewels, it will also become a source of all qualities. Just as gold is completely refined by the heat of fire, one will also completely practice the mind of enlightenment. Just as Mount Sumeru rises manifestly from the ocean, one will also surpass all worlds. And so on, it is widely proclaimed. As it is said, in the Gandavyuha Sutra, it is also said: "Noble son, Bodhisattvas who are properly guided by virtuous friends will not fall into the lower realms. Bodhisattvas who are guided by virtuous friends will not violate the precepts of the Bodhisattvas." And so on. Again, noble son, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, will be pleased with the Bodhisattva who engages in following the instructions of the virtuous friend. Omniscience will be close to the Bodhisattva who abides without contradicting the words of the virtuous friend. The virtuous friends will be close to those who have no doubt about the words of the virtuous friend. For those who are inseparable from remembering the virtuous friend, all meanings will be manifested. So it is said. Like this, by relying on a holy being, even if there is karma to experience lower realms in the next life, even if only a slight harm occurs to the body and mind this time, or even if experienced in a dream, that karma can be exhausted. And the benefit of serving the Guru once in the morning or afternoon can also surpass the benefit of accumulating roots of virtue in front of countless billions of Buddhas. In the Earth Store Sutra, it says, being controlled by it (referring to bad karma), for countless billions of kalpas.
