“To act in accordance.” The latter meaning has already been explained. Furthermore, in the Sutra Requested by the Fierce One, it says: “Householder, if a Bodhisattva receives teachings and diligently engages in generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, or possesses the accumulation of the path of a Bodhisattva, from whom did he hear the four-line verse? From whom did he receive it? One should respect that teacher from whom one receives and learns with Dharma. If the teacher can flawlessly transmit verses with as many names, phrases, and letters, then in those eons that the teacher exists, even if one serves him with all respect, offerings, and attendance, householder, if the respect for the teacher is not yet complete, what need is there to mention non-Dharmic respect?” In short, even if one fault of the disciple diminishes, or one virtue increases, it depends on relying on the lama. Therefore, one must first be skilled in seeking and examining the lama; secondly, one cannot merely be satisfied with finding the lama, but must be skilled in the methods of relying on the lama; and finally, one cannot naturally associate casually, but must learn the conduct of holy beings and the path of liberation. As it says in the Za ma tog bkod pa: “The Blessed One, during the three countless eons, in order to seek a spiritual friend, wandered through all the worlds, to the point that his feet were worn down to his hip bones.” The Wise and Foolish Sutra says that the king lit a thousand lamps on his own body for the sake of the Dharma; the Sdong po bkod pa records the liberation of Norzang; the Noble Eight Thousand Sutra records the liberation of Sadāprarudita; just as Emperor Trisong Detsen (742-797) imposed taxes on the people for the sake of the spiritual friend and the Dharma, one should endure all hardships. The Sutra of Four Dharmas says: “Monks, Bodhisattvas do not abandon the spiritual friend even for the sake of their lives.” Thus, one should cherish the spiritual friend more than life and learn their thoughts and actions. Just as it is said in the profound Sutra Pitaka and all the Tantras that the lama is the embodiment of the Buddha, his body, speech, and mind...

Because by training in liberation, one will become trained in the liberation of the Buddha. Thinking, 'I too shall do something similar to that,' I spend my time with the activities of listening, contemplating, and meditating. In the Bodhisattva Pitaka, it says: 'One who engages in practicing the guru's instructions completely purifies ten inexpressible billions of trillions of excellent intentions. That many powers increase. That many blessings arise. That many obscurations are purified. That many demons are overcome. One enters that many doors of Dharma. That many accumulations are completed. That many conducts are completely purified. That many aspirations are fulfilled. That many qualities are attained. In short, the complete perfection of all the Buddha's teachings depends on the guru and arises from the guru.' Furthermore, it is also important to abandon evil friends. 'Whenever a spirit who hates peace, whose thoughts come in the form of a man, relies on black Dharma with deceit and trickery, and hates white Dharma such as cursing the holy ones, the more one associates with them, the more evil deeds spread like a whirlwind, destroying the crops of virtue. The foolish wisdom of the teachings is destroyed by the hordes of demons.' Like this, although an evil friend exists in the form of a man, his thoughts are those of an Asura, therefore, directly or indirectly, they rely only on unpacified unions. Those whose minds are overwhelmed by the faults of deceit and trickery behave in a way that is extremely contradictory to the acceptance and rejection of black and white. Just associating with them increases evil and decreases virtue, therefore, they should be abandoned. In the Mindfulness Sutra, it says: 'The root of all desire, hatred, and ignorance is an evil friend, who is like a poisonous tree.' In the Jewel Heap Sutra, it says: 'What is an evil friend? It is one who diminishes virtue and engages in non-virtue. Do not rely on them, do not approach them, do not even see them.' Its fault is stated in the Nirvana Sutra: 'A Bodhisattva is not afraid of an evil friend, just as he is not afraid of a drunken elephant, etc., because these only destroy the body, while the former destroys'
