Because the merit of realization arises from the merging of minds, there is the preliminary of co-abiding, and after the Guru Yoga, one must also learn to merge one's mind with the Guru's mind. As it is said in the Jataka tales: "The noble ones are not bound by anyone, but should be taught virtue in a gentle manner. If you are near them, the dust of their qualities, even if you do not intentionally touch it, will be attached to you." Like this, most ignorant people who do not understand draw images and meditate, but do not serve the Guru who is actually present. They say they are meditating on the true nature, but they do not understand the Guru's mind. Their practice contradicts what is to be practiced, how pitifully ignorant. It is strange to expect to meet deities in the bardo without devotion. In Tibet, not to mention seeing the Guru as a Buddha, they do not even see the Guru as a good Geshe. Some people have no reason to see the Guru that way, but because of worldly fame and the accidental nature of ignorance, they draw images, make statues, recite the rituals of meditation, and make external supports of copper, gold, silver, and so on. Most of these are motivated by bad intentions to protect their reputation and seek fame and profit. Why? Because the way and direction of relating to the Guru who is actually present are completely opposite. In the Ratnakuta Sutra it is said: "All dharmas are causes and conditions, and abide in the root of intention." Therefore, without devotion and pure perception, generating confused and materialistic ideas, making statues and so on, is not as good as visualizing the image of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who naturally appear to all sentient beings without difference. This is more excellent. Similarly, empowerment, instructions, and the introduction to the truth come from the Guru. If you think that blessings and accomplishments come from somewhere else, that is a big mistake. Seeing the Guru and the Yidam in the bardo is also the self-manifestation of devotion and clarity, the Guru does not actually appear in the bardo. For these reasons, first be skilled in examining the Guru, in the middle be skilled in relying on the Guru, and finally be skilled in learning the Guru's view and conduct. Such a person will go on the right path. Having said that, nowadays the times are very degenerate, life and

Therefore, in times when teachers, Dharma, and guides are all in decline, it is crucial to thoroughly examine a lama first. Even if, due to the times, a lama with all the qualities cannot be found, as stated in the "Inquiry of Excellent Arm": "If one possesses all those qualities, it is extremely rare in times of strife; one with half, a quarter, or an eighth of the qualities." The characteristics of a good friend described here can be compared to a lama. Therefore, from the characteristics mentioned in the sutras and tantras, having half, or a quarter, or even an eighth is unavoidable. If such a lama cannot be found, and the disciple is very intelligent, if the (lama) leads and causes him to engage in actions that contradict the three vows, or introduces him to a non-path, temporarily, through skillful means, it is possible to turn him away from that path. As stated in the "Cloud of Jewels Sutra": "One should act in accordance with virtuous Dharma, and act in opposition to non-virtuous Dharma." And as stated in the "Vinaya Sutra": "If one speaks of non-Dharma, it should be stopped." And as stated in the "Story of Being Born as a Brahmin": "In order to examine the minds of his disciples, the teacher said that stealing is Dharma when a Brahmin is in decline. In the world, having no wealth is the greatest decline, therefore, do not take others' possessions when you see them." If one steals openly, one's reputation will be damaged; stealing secretly is the Brahmin's doctrine, and there is no fault. After saying this, the ordinary Brahmin disciples, although knowing it is unreasonable, do not dare to disobey the teacher's words. The Bodhisattva does not rejoice in this, and therefore says: "You have entered in this way for the sake of wealth, I do not approve of it in my heart. If one knows the difference between faults and virtues, who would waste virtues for the sake of wealth? Rather than abandoning shame for the sake of divine power, and doing things that contradict the Dharma in one's heart, it is easier to be content with holding a clay pot and wearing ragged clothes, even when seeing the wealth of enemies." After saying this, the teacher seems to give his approval. As also stated in the "Story of Being Born as Indra": "Therefore, those who practice Dharma should protect the nature of Dharma." And so on, extensively explained in Jambudvipa. However, one should not use this as a reason to despise and slander those who are regarded as lamas by ordinary people, because this contradicts the Dharma and vows.
