Whether the relationship is good or bad, one will suffer great harm, so one needs to be skilled in relying on a guru. As it says in the Guhyasamaja Tantra, "Once taken as sacred, whether or not it is determined to be sacred, how can one violate the teachings and abandon the rules? If that vow is broken, one will be severely tormented in the Vajra Hell." Also, as it says in the Abhidharmakosha, "Even if not a noble being, for parents, the sick, those who speak the Dharma, and the bodhisattva who is in their last existence, offerings are said to be immeasurable." As it says in the Jataka tales, King Shanskriti, in order to repay the kindness of a yaksha with a cruel form who spoke a verse to prevent evil, vowed to give his own body as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, and without hesitation, he gave away his son and wife. Therefore, do not examine from the perspective of faults, but think of the kindness of the Dharma, and even if one only possesses one of the qualities such as discipline, extensive learning, great compassion, faith, and generosity, one should train one's mind to focus solely on the aspect of their virtues. As it says in the Vajrapani Abhisheka Tantra, "Take the virtues of the teacher, never take their faults. Taking virtues, one attains accomplishment; taking faults, one does not accomplish." This means that even if the guru possesses virtues, if one examines them from the perspective of their slight faults, it will become a great obstacle to one's own attainment of accomplishment. In the past, the teacher Buddhajnana requested teachings from Manjushrimitra, and later, when he returned to his own country to teach the Dharma to many disciples, the teacher came in the form of a yogi, and because he was ashamed to prostrate, he pretended not to see him. Later, after the disciples had left, he went to prostrate, and the teacher asked, "Why didn't you prostrate just now?" He lied, saying that he didn't see him, and as a result, both of his eyes fell to the ground. Later, he begged for forgiveness and obtained the eye of wisdom. Similarly, having doubts or hesitation about any of the guru's faults is a reason to obscure both supreme and common accomplishments, and there are very many such examples. Even for those with many faults, one should cut off the habit of examining from the perspective of faults and only examine their virtuous aspects. If this still does not convince you, then this holy person must have accumulated merit from previous lives.

Having practiced the noble conduct and possessing virtues, we are now connected to virtuous spiritual friends, including ourselves. Just as our teacher also relied on Devadatta in his previous life and perfected the six paramitas, so should we contemplate. In the Lotus Sutra, it is said: The Bhagavan, having become a king, made aspirations for perfect enlightenment, but his mind never wavered. In order to perfect the six paramitas, he also gave up his kingdom, enjoyments, head, limbs, and hands. When he entered the path of seeking the Dharma, he beat a drum and proclaimed: Whoever can teach me the Dharma, I vow to be his servant. Devadatta transformed into a sage and taught the Lotus Sutra. Having generated joy and delight in it, he took firewood, tree roots, water roots, tubers, fruits, and so on from the sage, even serving as a gatekeeper. At night, he also held the legs of the bed. Having acted in this way, without any fatigue of body or mind, he spent a full thousand years. The Bhagavan said: Bhikshu Devadatta is also my virtuous spiritual friend. By relying on Devadatta, I perfected the six paramitas. Thus, he extensively explained how, by relying on Devadatta, he perfected all the factors of enlightenment. O Bhikshus, you should have faith in him and understand him. Furthermore, just as in the world called the Heavenly Ladder, it was prophesied that the Tathagata named Heavenly King would attain Buddhahood. Therefore, from the beginning, one has the right to examine, but from the explanation of even a single verse onwards, there is no place to find fault. In the Jewel Cloud Sutra, it is said: By relying on the lama, one understands that virtue increases and non-virtue decreases, therefore, one should generate the perception of the teacher in the Khenpo, whether he is learned or unlearned, knowledgeable or ignorant, possessing morality or immoral. Just as one generates joy and faith in the teacher, one should also generate faith and joy in the Khenpo. One should generate respect and service to the Acharyas, and through this, the unfulfilled accumulations for enlightenment will be fulfilled, and the undispelled afflictions will be dispelled, thinking in this way, one obtains joy and delight, and one acts in accordance with virtuous Dharma, and not in non-virtuous Dharma.
