I see that he will become a good friend, although he may make noise like a fickle person. However, his mind follows the good and bad of his words, and he is not as unfeeling as a rock. For those who behave improperly, he disregards local customs and agreements; like a pure Brahma, his conduct and meditation are united; for those whose practice is not yet stable, they rely on region and companions to distinguish between high and low; the teacher bestows blessings, accumulating merit for others; I also do not abandon asceticism, like a wish-fulfilling jewel for beggars; only harmonious alms are my livelihood. Stealing by extremely impure means, seeking more with what is obtained, feigning flattery, and the five wrong livelihoods of measuring with gain, bring shame to the practice of the righteous. Therefore, dwelling should be good, livelihood should be good, companions and associations should be good, to uplift the spirit. To perfect the qualities of all trainings, one should rely on virtuous individuals. Just as in the forests of Malaya, even ordinary pieces of wood wandering about emit fragrance like sandalwood with moist branches, whoever one relies on, one follows after. Completing all the righteous Dharma, although difficult to obtain due to the degenerate age, on the pure ground of the three vows, the mindstream is moistened with hearing, thought, and great compassion. Skilled in the rituals of the Sutra Pitaka, Vinaya Pitaka, Abhidhamma Pitaka, and Tantra Pitaka, rich with the stainless wisdom fruit of abandonment and realization, adorned with the flowers of the four means of gathering, one should rely on those who attract the bees of fortunate disciples. In particular, the Lama who teaches the oral instructions must have received empowerment, abide by the vows, be extremely peaceful, understand the essential meaning of the root, path, and fruit tantras, have liberated his own mind through accomplishment of recitation and practice, possess immeasurable compassion, seek only to benefit others, have few activities, be diligent in Dharma, possess great renunciation, and also encourage others, be skillful in means, and possess the blessings of the lineage. Relying on such a person, one quickly attains accomplishment. Like a Brahmin guarding his lineage, or in a pond fearing the decline of a sacred site, engaging in bathing that is not the fruit of hearing and thought. Like a wooden measuring tool, the guide, although not contradicting the nature of ordinary beings, fools, with blind faith, regard any random place as sacred, and offer with profit and respect.

I have created (this discourse). A spiritual friend like the pulley of a well, With little learning, and vows and commitments broken, Of low character, and whose conduct is base, Whose rope of love and compassion is severed, From mad guides like these, sin increases. Especially, not someone with more qualities than oneself, If one relies on someone without bodhicitta for the sake of fame, It is like a blind guide, a great loss, Eventually wandering in the darkness of false association. Therefore, if one does not carefully examine the guru, The virtuous deeds of the faithful will be wasted, The rare opportunity of leisure and fortune will be like a venomous snake and, The shadow of a tree, deceiving in error. The guru who possesses all qualities, Is the essence of the wisdom and compassion of all Buddhas. To tame beings, they appear in human form, They are the supreme root of all siddhis. In conventional truth, they are in harmony with everyone, In ultimate truth, their views contradict everyone, Because they have profound intentions, they surpass everyone. Skilled at cutting doubts, able to endure hardship and fatigue, Able to liberate from the ocean of samsara, they are a great ship, A true guide who will not lead astray, They destroy the fire of karma and afflictions, they are a rain of nectar, They dispel the darkness of ignorance, they are like the sun and moon. Because the vehicle they ride is very large, they are like the earth, They are the source of benefit and happiness, a wish-fulfilling tree, Possessing the treasure of Dharma, they are a good vase, More supreme than a wish-fulfilling jewel that produces everything. They love all beings equally, like parents, Their vast and swift compassion is like a great river, Their unchanging joy is like the king of mountains, Mount Meru, Their impartial equanimity is like rain clouds. Such a guru is no different from all the Buddhas, Even if harmed, if connected to the path of liberation, For the person who relies on them with sincere faith, The qualities of higher realms and definite goodness will fall like rain. Like a patient needing a doctor, a guest needing an escort, A fearful person needing a helper, a merchant needing a guide, A sailor needing a helmsman, one should rely on the guru out of fear of birth and death and, The enemy of afflictions. Taking refuge in the guru is being a disciple, For someone without the capacity, essence is of no benefit, If one only obtains temporary satisfaction, One observes the changes of the four seasons with artificial faith. Initially not entering the path of Dharma, like a wild yak, In the middle, hating study and contemplation, only caring for this life, Finally going in the direction of evil friends.
