Like putting a child in the embrace of a loving mother, such a key instruction is needed. For example, the relationship between mother and child is intimate, and due to the power of karma, even newly born animals can unhesitatingly suckle their own mother's milk from among many mothers. The wisdom of the ground, the essence of great primordial purity, exists like a mother, and it is realized through Trekchö (Tibetan: ཁྲེགས་ཆོད་). From that, the appearance of the self-display of the ground, like a child, is familiarized through Tögal (Tibetan: ཐོད་རྒལ་). When the essence and self-display are in the bardo, like the sun and its rays, one naturally becomes certain that it is not other than self-display, and like putting a child in the embrace of its mother, one is enlightened without self-nature in the bardo as soon as one distinguishes them. For this, there is this special secret path: after all the stages of dissolution bound by grossness are completed, at the moment when the connection between body and mind is severed (page 424), the alaya consciousness, without memory or rememberer, is said to dissolve into space, but in reality, at that instant of dissolving into the dharmadhatu, the self-existing luminosity is like an autumn sky without clouds. It is neither interrupted nor does it fall into any direction, appearing as empty and clear, without obscurations. Recognizing this, and abiding in the natural state without any fabrication, is called the great ground of primordial liberation. From the ground of delusion, it is distinguished by six characteristics, and liberation is forcibly attained in the great inner expanse of primordial purity. Here, the Omniscient One said: In the ocean of profound meaning, when dissolving into the luminosity of space, the instruction of this place of liberation is arranged by connecting the word "first instant" to the words below. The reason for this can be understood in the key instructions that exhaustively examine the instructions, such as the Lamp of Essential Practice. In general, the appearance of primordially endowed knowledge does not enter into things bound by six extremes and four modes, such as extensive and concise explanations, and (page 425) hidden explanations. Therefore, even if one wants to apply some scripture and reason to these things, since this is a text of key instructions, from the point of view of relying on meaning, I avoid too many words. If one is not liberated there, it is called dissolving into the luminosity of space, as it says in the Kalachakra Tantra: The alaya consciousness of beings is called dissolving into luminosity. As soon as the journey of inward and outward breath is interrupted, from the part of one's own sense faculties, the object

There is no appearance, but a knowing that thinks there is arises. This body with substance does not appear, but appears clearly as a body of light. At that time, whatever becomes the object of experience appears as a mandala of five lights. Thus, at that time, without the time changing, the appearance changes, and later the appearances of the stable and moving, such as stones, mountains, rocks, trees, forests, sun, and moon, all disappear. Wherever you look, it is like an opened brocade, or like looking at the sunlight with eyes covered with silk (426). All appearances are extremely bright, with various colors, without inside or outside, or narrowness, having a moving form, and shining intensely. At that time, the more familiar one is with Tögal (Direct Crossing), the more the appearance arises as a friend of awareness, allowing for liberation. For those who are not familiar, there is only a part like a shooting star. The way awareness holds its own ground is stated in the Root Tantra: At that time, when there is a fragment of light, the wise hold the arising appearance. Thus, naturally settling into meditation, recognizing the arising appearance as one's own appearance, in the first instant, one believes that one's own appearance has no self-nature. In the second instant, one is liberated in one's own ground. In the third instant, one firmly occupies the ground of liberation, and from then on, there is no appearance whatsoever. Then, merging into the union of clear light is as stated in the Union of Sun and Moon: Again, the clear light of the person merges into union, which is called appearance, those appearances self-arise as forms of the body (427), those bodies are neither large nor small, but equal in size, with ornaments, colors, postures, seats, thrones, and their respective hand gestures. Thus, when appearing in wrathful form, those bodies, even if they are only the size of a mustard seed in a conch shell, in the bardo are as large as pervading the world, and equal in size between being as small as a mustard seed. Those forms are uncertain, and the appearance of being struck by the wheel of various weapons at their own nature causes fear, and the unbearable sound as loud as a thousand dragons roaring causes hatred, and the rays that pierce like weapons destroy. As stated in the Klongsal: At that time, sound condenses into light, the appearance of the body causes fear. Thus, just as seeing the lion's food pierces the weakness, one needs the confidence of not being afraid of one's own appearance. Even ordinary good people retreat from here (428).
