Acting with reverence in body, speech, and mind, abandoning harsh words leads to hearing pleasant sounds. Abandoning idle talk makes words powerful. Abandoning greed fulfills wishes. Abandoning harmful intent leads to freedom from harm. Abandoning wrong views gives rise to good views in the mind. Therefore, I should strive to accumulate virtuous deeds in accordance with my merit, thereby increasing wisdom and strength. (269) Fifth, contemplating the benefits of liberation: Whether one attains the state of a Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, or Samyaksambuddha, any attainment is peaceful and cool, and is a liberation from the suffering of samsara. How joyful I am! Among these, now having the good fortune to encounter the Mahayana, I should cultivate the ten virtues, the four immeasurables, the six perfections, the four dhyanas, the four formless absorptions, and the union of shamatha and vipashyana, desiring only to accomplish perfect enlightenment, and generate the corresponding intention and bodhicitta. The main practice is without focus, and the subsequent practice is sealed with dedication and aspiration, and upheld by the three supremes, thereby engaging in practice. Sixth, relying on a virtuous spiritual friend: Without relying on a guru, one cannot attain Buddhahood; this is not mentioned in any of the sutras, tantras, or shastras. In this life, no one has ever generated the qualities of the paths and bhumis through self-creation and speculation. Like this, oneself and all sentient beings are drowning in evil deeds; how shameful this is! Like a blind person lost in a vast wilderness, knowing nothing of the path to liberation and omniscience, without the guidance of a virtuous friend, one can only wander in emptiness. For example, without relying on a captain, one cannot obtain treasures from the island of jewels. Therefore, a virtuous spiritual friend and virtuous companions are the direct guides to liberation and the ground of omniscience. One should rely on them with reverence, honor them with the crown of one's head, follow their teachings, and not generate even a moment of displeasure, thereby generating joy in the benefits of reliance. Not being dominated by evil friends and ignorance, not becoming weary of the way of relying on a guru, and striving to make aspirations to meet excellent gurus in future lives and to be embraced by their compassion. This was written by Dzogchenpa Rangjung Dorje. (271) The Uncommon Preliminary Practice Guide of the Great Perfection Longchen Nyingtik, "Mindfulness, Close Placement," is complete. (272) Homage to the self-arisen, primordial expanse! Common

After making the mind-stream suitable through the seven-branch preliminary mind training, and opening the understanding with uncommon and special preliminaries, one should be placed in the supreme state of the King of Vehicles, the luminous essence of the Great Perfection of Naturalness. Because there have been many levels of guidance, the teachings of the Heart Essence have become like a butter lamp in a painting (empty and unreal), and being weary of this, I vow to restore the teachings to their original state, upholding the intention of the master of this supreme vehicle, the King of Conquerors, Longchen Rabjam (Longchenpa) (273), thereby reviving the foundation of the teachings. Firstly, there are three aspects to taking refuge: distinguishing the differences, the manner of taking refuge, and contemplating the benefits. The first is: Like this, if one takes refuge in the Three Jewels out of fear of the suffering of the three lower realms, and for the sake of merely seeking the happiness of the higher realms of fortunate rebirths, this is called a lesser person, because they have no other purpose than to seek temporary happiness. If one takes refuge in the (274) Three Jewels out of fear of the suffering of samsara, and for the sake of seeking peace and happiness for oneself alone, this is called a middling person, because their aim is merely to liberate themselves from samsara. If one sees the suffering of other sentient beings in endless samsara, and takes refuge in the Three Jewels in order to liberate them from samsara, this is called a great person, because their aim is to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. Therefore, abandoning the ways of the lesser and middling persons, one should train in the ways of the great person for the benefit of all sentient beings, thus adjusting one's motivation. Secondly, the manner of taking refuge is: according to the common vehicle, one takes refuge by regarding the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the refuge, and the Sangha as companions on the path of practice; according to the uncommon general tantric way, one takes refuge by offering the three doors to the lama, relying on the yidam, and making the dakinis one's companions; according to the special supreme method of the Vajra Essence, one takes refuge on the swift path of relying on the root incarnation, purifying the winds into the enjoyment body, and purifying the bindus into the Dharma body; ultimately, one takes refuge in the unerring reality, the Vajra (Dharmata) (275).
