In a place where not even a clod of earth is visible, where only blizzards lash the body, naked and exposed to the great threat of cold, blisters suddenly erupt on the body, hence it is called the Blister Hell. When the blisters burst and become wounds, it is called the Burst Blister Hell. Due to the unbearable pain, one clenches their teeth, hence it is called the Teeth-Clenching Hell. Constantly uttering cries of lament, it is called the Achuchu Hell. Because the voice is hoarse, one utters long, drawn-out wails. The skin cracks into four pieces, hence it is called the Cracking Like an Utpala Flower Hell. It cracks into eight pieces (page 253), hence it is called the Cracking Like a Lotus Hell. It cracks into sixteen and thirty-two pieces, and so on, countless pieces, hence it is called the Cracking Greatly Like a Lotus Hell. In such cracked bodies, sharp-beaked creatures enter and devour, and the suffering of unbearable cold is experienced. These eight situations form eight names of suffering, which should be contemplated in the mind as before. Then there are the temporary sufferings: being squeezed between rocks, being wrapped in stones, being frozen in icy rivers, being boiled in hot springs, being burned in fire, and the suffering of cutting down trees, personally experiencing the pain of limbs being severed; also, for objects that are constantly used, such as pestles, brooms, sticks, doors, winnowing baskets, pillars, hearths, ropes, etc., arising attachment and experiencing unbearable suffering; suffering in an iron house during the day, and the opposite at night, killing each other, etc. One should contemplate in the mind and generate renunciation towards the experience of various different kinds of suffering. Then there is the suffering of the pretas (hungry ghosts): divided into those who dwell in the abyss (page 254) and those who wander in the sky. For those who dwell in the abyss, there are three common sufferings: there is no flesh between the skin and bones, so they become emaciated and withered, and for many years they do not hear the sound of food or drink, let alone taste it. Those with external obscurations: experience the four inversions, such as the reversal of hot and cold, and when they see rivers and fruits, etc., and try to approach them, they immediately disappear, leaving behind only unpleasant desolate valleys and barren plains. Or, they are guarded by people wielding weapons, and suffer the pain of being beaten and humiliated. Those with internal obscurations: their mouths are only as big as the eye of a needle, so even if they drink the water of the ocean, their throa

Even a tiny amount of food, as thin as a horse's tail, cannot be obtained; they can only lick dry things with their mouths. Their bellies are as large as a field, but their thin limbs cannot support them. Even if they occasionally find a little food, burning sand and gravel fall upon it. Throughout the night, their lungs and hearts burn with flames, and smoke billows from their nostrils, which is called the obscuration of food and drink. Especially the obscuration of carrying burdens: the bodies of each preta are filled with nests of many animals, which devour them from the inside. In short, even when they (255) meet each other, they strike and fight each other with angry minds. The pus that comes from their throats, when ripe, must be used as food, etc., which is extremely miserable. The second type is the pretas who roam in the sky: including madness and forgetfulness, and the Tsen and Gyalpo, who harm other Yaksha races. Although they have some magical powers and enjoyment, they are unstable due to excessive harm, and the timing is reversed and disordered. They are always tormented by the feeling of previously explaining the key points, and they have evil thoughts of transferring the suffering to others. They experience suffering similar to the forms of dogs and birds, and the four inverted perceptions also commonly arise, so they are very miserable. They always have evil thoughts of harming others, thus accumulating suffering in the future, etc., because they possess great faults, they are called those who have gone to the world of Yama, and one should strive to avoid being born there, and should practice in this way. Next is the suffering of animals: divided into scattered and aggregated. The scattered are: birds and wild animals, etc., which are ownerless, eat each other, and hunters and (256) outcasts, etc., take their lives by various means. Horses, cattle, buffaloes, sheep, etc., which are owned, are put into pens, tormented by labor, have their noses pierced, wings cut, live blood drawn, and are slaughtered. Moreover, people in remote areas slaughter them like hell beings, etc., which are seen and heard directly. The aggregated are: it is said that those who have abandoned the virtues associated with liberation will experience it, they dwell in the dark ocean between continents and the four great water reservoirs, eating each other, without any light, suffering from heat, cold, hunger, thirst, and foolishness.
