If the time is right and the Dharma abides, but one does not enter the gate of Dharma, there is no benefit. Entering the gate of Dharma, one becomes prosperous through one's own merit. Even if one has entered, if one is not guided by a virtuous spiritual friend, one will not understand the true nature of Dharma. Therefore, one becomes prosperous through the extraordinary compassion of the spiritual friend. These five must be complete by relying on other conditions, so they are called the "Five Others' Fortunes." If all eighteen conditions are complete, it is a basis for practicing the sacred Dharma, so it is called "Precious Human Body." If even one of these is missing, one cannot truly walk the path of liberation, so it is called "Ordinary Human Body." Therefore, we ourselves can also be called "Precious Human Body." We should rejoice in the fact that we are in this state today, and we should be vigilant about the situation in which the eighteen qualities of leisure and endowment are diminished due to the reversal of karma and the decline of faith. This is very important. Because such a human body will be difficult to obtain in the future, if we do not make good use of the leisure and endowment we have obtained now, we will not be able to distinguish between good and evil when we fall into the lower realms in the future. Even if we obtain a good realm, it will be difficult to meet a virtuous spiritual friend. Whatever we do will become evil deeds, so if we do not realize the fault of not being able to escape from the suffering of samsara, we are foolish. We should think about this from the bottom of our hearts. Even in towns and large markets, we should carefully observe how many precious human bodies possess all eighteen conditions, and repeatedly think about how difficult it is to obtain such a human body from our own perspective. Third, contemplate the analogy of difficulty to obtain: Like a yoke with a single hole floating on the ocean churned by great waves, never staying in one place for even a moment. On the ocean floor, a blind turtle emerges once every hundred years. When it emerges, its neck happens to pass through the hole in the yoke. Obtaining a human body is more difficult than this, as the Tathagata has said. Fourth, contemplate the difference in numbers: Observing the number and levels of sentient beings, the opportunity to obtain a human body is extremely rare. For example, hell beings are as numerous as the stars at night, and hungry ghosts are as numerous as the stars in the daytime. Hungry ghosts are as numerous as the stars at night, and animals are as numerous as the stars in the daytime. Animals are as numerous as the stars at night, and beings in the good realms are as few as the stars in the daytime. Thus, it is evident that for a single human body, the internal and external

How then to examine oneself? Even people are separated from the light of Dharma, and for those who have fallen away from the Dharma, those who act according to the Dharma are very few. So in general, merely obtaining a human body, and especially obtaining a body endowed with Dharma, is difficult. Thinking well about this, generate certainty about the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment. Second, contemplate the impermanence of life. First, contemplate the outer world and meditate on impermanence: Like this, the four continents, Mount Meru, and the heavenly realms, which are extremely solid and stable, and can exist for a kalpa, will also face a time of destruction. At that time, seven suns and one flood will not leave even dust (245). Think about this and generate renunciation. Second, contemplate the impermanence of sentient beings: Even gods and sages who live for a kalpa and have perfect glory cannot escape the moment of death. We, the people of Jambudvipa, are born in a place where life is uncertain, in the degenerate age, so we will die quickly now. The towns and monasteries that were once prosperous and flourishing, these empty ruins, initially had their own excellent men, but now they have become nests for birds. Most of the parents, relatives, villagers, neighbors, and livestock that one can only remember are gone, and look at the times when those who were still there last year are no longer there this year. Especially now, one's own limbs and so on are given good food and clothing, and decorations and behavior are very careful, but day and night pass, life is short, and death will come soon. The breath is weak, the luster disappears, the limbs tremble, the consciousness is confused, the body is stiff, tied with ropes, covered with cloth, and thrown naked in the cemetery. The limbs and pieces of flesh are similar, and are eaten by birds (246) vultures and wild animals. When the hair and bones are scattered, relatives and wealth will not follow, and consciousness will not let go. Only karma follows. That moment may happen even within a day today, without certainty, so thinking about this is unbearable. Remember with strong intention, and in all three states of walking, dwelling, and sleeping, think that this is the end of this life's actions, say it in your mouth, and visualize it clearly in your mind.
