Anger is: Regarding beings who are displeasing to the mind, considering them to be the essence of anger, clinging to the mind of hatred as a permanent and real entity; repeatedly recalling improper things, the mind of resentment; being extremely intolerant of the perpetrator, the mind of arrogance; thinking how wonderful it would be to kill or beat these people, the mind of annoyance; driven by any of the five afflictions that overwhelm shame and fault, striving to engage in actions such as capturing, binding, and killing, and ultimately, if actually capable, resolving to do it. Its ripened fruit is the three lower realms. The fruit similar to the cause is great fear. The dominant fruit is being plagued by illness and an increase in harm from humans and non-humans. (213) Wrong view is: Regarding infallible things such as the law of cause and effect, with the desire to deny them, considering them to be untrue, and driven by any affliction, wanting to slander, the action is to understand it as non-existent as one thinks, and ultimately making a firm decision. Its ripened fruit is various lower realms. The fruit similar to the cause is being ignorant of correct views. The dominant fruit is the reversal of good and bad. Thus, the ten non-virtuous actions, if distinguishing the weight of sins from the internal classification, are: being driven by strong afflictive emotions; the guru who is important in divine dharma; the parents who are important in human dharma; killing such special objects; deceiving, plundering, and alienating them; speaking harsh words, greed, and anger; engaging in sexual misconduct in places where one should not, such as those abiding in the vows of discipline; like Devadatta, making false and divisive speech that causes division in the Sangha; believing that Arhats do not appear; killing beings like livestock, who possess large bodies that pride themselves on flesh and blood; stealing many (214) valuable items; rejoicing in committing sins without confession or restraint, and so on, these are very heavy. The opposite of these are light. As Prince Padmasambhava said: The ten non-virtues and the five heinous crimes, the five near-heinous crimes and the four root sins, the eight inverted actions and unforgivable deeds, even at the cost of life, one should abandon subtle speech.

Oh! To accord with the ten virtues, lay practitioners, novices, nuns, monks, etc., whichever vows of individual liberation, Bodhisattva vows, or secret mantra vows one has taken, one must uphold and protect them. You who desire liberation, be sure to guard them as carefully as your own life. As it is said, be sure to clearly understand the principle of cause and effect that has just been explained, examine which part of your own mindstream is predominant, and then grasp it firmly. No matter how many countless sins have been accumulated in the past, because they have not been grasped by awareness and mindfulness, one has wandered in an unguided state, and in the matter of accumulating karma, one has not truly realized it like a barbarian, committing a very great mistake. From now on, as soon as a subtle or gross sinful thought arises, represented by the ten non-virtuous actions, one must rely on the antidote and try to prevent it from raising its head. Not only that, but (215) from the opposite side, with powerful virtuous actions, such as abandoning killing and other ten virtuous paths, one should generate effort like extinguishing a fire that has broken out on one's head or clothes. Until such intention and joy arise, one should meditate. As Master Vasubandhu said: Visible dharma, etc., ripening, etc., are divided into three by this. For example, take the story of the sinful Devadatta, the flesh-eating Rakshasa, and Glorious Holder, etc., who went to hell without abandoning their bodies, as an example of visible dharma ripening, unless one is a sinner who is certain to be born in the three lower realms, do not think like this. Alas, if that is the case, then in order to attain liberation and omniscience, one must eradicate the root of those non-virtuous deeds. But on closer thought, although one has accumulated such obvious sins in this life, this is not even a small part of it. In past lives, for the sake of one's retinue, disciples, sangha, etc., one has accumulated unimaginable sins, which can be determined. Moreover, these fruits can only be experienced by oneself, and cannot be shared with those (216) for whom the deeds were done. As Master Nagarjuna said: You should not commit sins for the sake of Brahmins, monks, gods, guests, parents, wives, and retinue, because no one can share the ripening results of hell. As it is said, Haha! Haha! I am finished!
